OSX Mavericks keyboard volume buttons not working on MacBook. Help.

Subject says it all. I think they broke it! Keyboard voume up/down and mute buttons don't work on OSX Mavericks. Sound is just ON. Volume can be adjusted from the System Preferences, but that is very inconvenient.

go to system preferences then keyboard then uncheck the use all F1 F2 keys icon .
