Mavericks running out of "Application Memory" with 32 GB of RAM

OK, this really isn't right at all.

How about getting an error message that says I am running out of "Appliction Memory" on a Mac Pro with 32 GB of RAM?!?!

What was I running?

Safari

Mail

iTunes

MS Excel

plus my usual background items such as Dropbox, Overflow, Growl & popClip. **EXACTLY** what the system ran quite happily before crashing on the Mavericks rocks.

BTW, why did Apple feel the need to re-do the Actvivty Monitor such that we now have "MEMORY PRESSURE" as opposed to what UN*X systme have used for many, many years prior??

A re-boot and same environment, now reporting 12 out of 32 GB memory usage.

Craig, go back and FIX your 'awsome' memory compacting cr@p. Out of memory warranrting a re-boot (everything was being recommended to be force-quit) is NOT memory efficiency.

Mail taking 1.2 MINUTES to start on a SSD drive isnt't right either.

Anybody else seen this weirdness?

Mac Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9), 32 GB Memory, SSD Boot, 25 TB Disk

Has anyone downlaoeded Maverick and not had this problem??

Not here, not any of my iMacs, MacBook Pros or MacBook Airs, of various ages and memory configurations ranging from 4 GB to 32 GB.

Experience as a part-time PC administrator will only prove detrimental to using a Mac, and repeated "me too" responses will not be productive no matter how many you post.

MAYBE THE ANSWER!!!

My strategy in debugging this problem has been to apply updates one at a time and see how the system operates within a 3-4 hour period with both the email program and browser functioning.

1. First ran the regular updates from App Store. Still had problem.

2. Checked version of Flash and Reader. Updated both. Still had problem

3. Went through one by one various programs that do not get automatically updated (parallels, etc) and updated each. Still had problem.

4. Checked printer drivers for both my Canon printers. Saw they had a Mavericks update on 10/23. Updated both. PROBLEM HAS DISAPPEARED.

Now this has only been one day of fully functioning and no crashes, but this has been the longest period of no crashes yet, even when leting the system go to sleep or screen saver.

Let me know if updating your printer drivers fix your problem.

Cheers

Howie

David Preston1,

It could be something on your system, care to post an EtreCheck report?

http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

There is no promise it will reveal or fix anything, however having old kernel extensions etc can conflict across the entire system.

If Apple are going through support with you, stick with them & come back here if they fail otherwise I can point out parts to consider removing or updating if you send a report, otherwise take a look at http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck_story for info on the report sections.

OK, my emial is FINALLY working, without Mail going nuts.

After the update, I had to delete all of my accounts, re-boot and re-enter all of my accounts (I have 15 accounts because I do a lot of web desing and support for several not-for-profits).

Anyway, all is working as before, which is great. Now I just have to re-import allo of the old email folders...

Whoops..... I tried following your instructions, but got carried away and deleted, somehow, the startup item that references the MAC OS at startup.... This means that my computer is unable to run. I need help. I got desperate after 30 hours of editing a football game for my sons team, (championship game) and couldn't export due to "not enough app memory". So after buying 16GB of ram, and trying to export, my virtual memory shot up to 80GB, and my kernel tasks were using 15GB and iMovie was only accounting for 1GB memory. The movie would only be 2GB of space.

So after reading this post about removing startup items that might be causing the memory to be overrun I got a little carried away, and I now can't login to my computer. Is there any hope for me? I am nearly ready to throw away my MAC and never buy one again. Any suggestions?

Bummer...

OK, I am trying to understand how far your system gets when starting up.

Do you see a Login Screen (or home screen), or does the cursor just spin trying to find the boot image?

You should be able to restart the system and hold down the Option Key right after to boot chime. You should see two disks to start from: the normal disk and the backup diask. If you select the backup disk, the system should boot into a recovery mode.

Does that work?

In my case, the error comes up only when I am in Mail. I have a late 2013 MacBook Pro. As soon as I got it, I transferred everything from my early 2008 MacBook (which was running 10.6.8) using Migration Assistant. All the other applications appear to be working. When I go into Mail, the memory use (viewed through Activity Monitor) immediately climbs until I get the "Application Memory Full" error message, usually in one minute or so. If I force quit mail, the memory use stays high. All applications are unusable until I reboot. It happens even if I disable all mail accounts. Recent Mail updates have no effect on this problem. I have spent several hours on the phone with Apple tech support over the last week. They have copied various log files and sent them to Engineering, but still no answer. . . .
