Mavericks running out of "Application Memory" with 32 GB of RAM

OK, this really isn't right at all.

How about getting an error message that says I am running out of "Appliction Memory" on a Mac Pro with 32 GB of RAM?!?!

What was I running?

Safari

Mail

iTunes

MS Excel

plus my usual background items such as Dropbox, Overflow, Growl & popClip. **EXACTLY** what the system ran quite happily before crashing on the Mavericks rocks.

BTW, why did Apple feel the need to re-do the Actvivty Monitor such that we now have "MEMORY PRESSURE" as opposed to what UN*X systme have used for many, many years prior??

A re-boot and same environment, now reporting 12 out of 32 GB memory usage.

Craig, go back and FIX your 'awsome' memory compacting cr@p. Out of memory warranrting a re-boot (everything was being recommended to be force-quit) is NOT memory efficiency.

Mail taking 1.2 MINUTES to start on a SSD drive isnt't right either.

Anybody else seen this weirdness?

Mac Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9), 32 GB Memory, SSD Boot, 25 TB Disk

Here is my config. Note this is with Google calendar sync turned of. If I turn this on the memory usage of the calendar app goes up fast. I also had a couple of situations where Word locks up but that may be unrelated.

Kernel Extensions are always a good place to start. It seems your only one may be out of date?

http://openafs.org/macos.html

I'd be tempted to remove it from /Library/Extensions, reboot & try the items you know cause excessive RAM usage. Grab a report as it starts eating memory too incase it highlights a different process is maxing out the RAM.

The uptime is 1 day 8 hours and you have no page outs which means the system hasn't completely run out of RAM in that time, so whatever you have been doing has been correct since the last reboot. Does that sound like what you have experienced or has it been problematic in that time. It's possible that Applications will be rebuilding caches & indexes so they may need time to do their thing. So long as they don't start paging out the system is keeping up.

Check your GPGtools are upto date & all the other items that get run as agents or daemons to be on the safe side. I'd be tempted to remove the MS update daemon to see if that effects Word. Move it out of /Library/LaunchDaemons, chances are it will ask about allowing auto update & want to restore the daemon 😟

You have 2 spotify login items in the user account prefs. It shouldn't be an issue, but there doesn't seem to be an point tempting fate.

Tidy up the old Flash player versions, in the Internet Plugins inside the Libraries, and maybe remove one of the Adobe reader plugins?

Otherwise your system looks pretty good to me.

Well, currently, my leak seams to have stopped! I found people describing the problem is in "Profile Manager" which I do have running.

Their solution was to stop Profile manager, stop devicemgr, then run the following SQL Statement:

sudo -u _devicemgr /Applications/Server.app/Contents/ServerRoot/usr/bin/psql -d devicemgr_v2m0 -h /Library/Server/ProfileManager/Config/var/PostgreSQL -c "DELETE FROM db_notifications WHERE message LIKE '[DMDevicemgrd updateAllProfilesForID:%'";

For me, this only found two records. So, obviously not my problem. But the discussion did lead me to my /Library/Logs/ProfileManager folder where the "devicemgrd.log" files are kept. In there I noticed my devicemgrd.log files were HUGE! largest uncompressed log file was 27.81 GB! Inside the Log files there is an exception caught error logged over and over and over, many within seconds.

So I shutdown my Profile Manager server, Devicemgr service. Cleaned out all the log files and Compressed log files for Devicemgrd.

Then suddenly I noticed my "devicemgrd" process sitting at 57 MB ! Usually started at about a GIG, then worked itself up the 10, 11 + Gigabytes before I'd reboot. But now it is staying at 57 MB and my Memory isn't ramping up anymore!!! I have no idea what exactly stopped this exception from happening??? I have even started Profile Manager back up, restarted and it is still staying at 57 MB. yeah.

Obviously this memory leak is related to the Profile Manager and their use of the PGDatabaseNotification.m class to work with Postgres.

--------------

Completly unrelated, I have my second monitor OFF because if I try to use multiple monitors, it crashes the WindowServer process which then blanks the screens, leaving me blind.

Maverick = couple pretty serious bugs at the moment !!!

Nov 2, 2013 12:11 PM in response to Drew Reece

I am having a similar problem, but I don't run Server stuff, so the suggestions I've seen haven't been helpful. I suspect flash or perhaps having so many tabs open, but I'm not pushing my computer harder than I used to before Mavericks.

This snapshot is fairly typical, although today I haven't had any problems … yet.

Has anyone downlaoeded Maverick and not had this problem??

Forget the kernel and all that stuff, I for the most part spent the big bucks to switch to Apple to stop having to be a part-time computer administrator!!! Now Apple with Mavericks is worse than PC in that regard. Been using my old PC after about 3 or 4 days of frustration after downlaoding Mavericks. I do have a Time Machine and per the CNET article did a backup BEFORE downloading Maverick -- those guys are smart!!! So, how do I go back to 10.8??

See this user tip if you want info about EtreCheck…

https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6171

If you download & run it you will see a system report, post it here or read the "About these results" guide from EtreCheck. It should help highlight any items that may be suspicious, it's entirely possible that old software is making the system unstable & is leaking memory.

The symptoms you are all describing are not normal, hopefully with EtreCheck & some cleaning up we can resolve it, otherwise a clean reinstall is another way to be sure Mavericks is only running stable software.

Yes, I did a clean install (erase the HD before install) & it seems really sweet to me, friends I trust also love it, but it did ruin my sisters iMac so it wouldn't boot.

You can't just ignore the 'kernel & all that stuff' it's the core of the OS, if you fill it with old code & expect it to work like 10.8 you will continue to have many issues, Apple restructured from the kernel upwards. Sorry you need to clean up if you are running the latest OS.

I'll try to help you if you post a report from EtreCheck otherwise we can only guess what might be installed.

See these tips if you want to revert, it may be a case of 'Throwing out the baby with the bath water' if you don't even look at an EtreCheck report. Also see the "About these results" from EtreCheck. It's the best advice I can offer.

I understand your frustrations, however we are mostly just other users, send feedback to Apple if you want Apple to hear (there is almost 12,000 posts on Mavericks alone, I don't beleive they read them all).

@ David Preston1The email issue and resolution is documented here:

MAC OS X 10.9 Mavericks Mail refuses password

The memory issue is I believe slightly different. Can you confirm if you have Xcode installed on your machine. I think I have determined the issue but need to check a few things to confirm.

1. You have Xcode INstalled

2. You have check and install updated automatically turned on in Xcode preferences

Peter, Monstamash and David,

I do not have XCode. However, maybe there are runtime versions buried within some programs that do.

Here is what I have observed over the past week:

- If I boot up and do not open any programs at all, then let the system go into sleep mode or if it goes to screen saver, then everything is fine. Useless mind you, but it;s a data point.

- If I limit the operation to anything other than my mail program (Outlook for Mac 2011, latest rev from 2 weeks ago) or browser (Firefox 25.0), then the system may crash once in the day. I have to assume the culprit is the program that shows "PAUSED" first, when the "application running out of memory" window comes up. This is consistantly Skype.

- If I run mail, the system will crash within 3 hours under normal use and do not let the system go to screen saver mode. If I go for a coffee and let the system idle, the system will crash.

- The same is true of Firsfox, however, I have found that while Firefox crashes the system the fastest, Google Chrome and Safari will crash the system much later.

Not very scientific, but it shows the magitude of the problem.

FOR APPLE SUPPORT OR ENGINEERS MODERATING THIS MESSAGE BOARD: Please re-name Maverick 10.9 to MemryLeak 10.9 It is obvious for us in the software and hardware field that Apple rushed this release. It may have passed Q&A for current release products and internal/Apple-developed software, however, there must have been shortcuts when it came to older 2012 and previous hardware products. SSadly, this has to make Steve Jobs turn in his grave. I know he would rip the Q&A team over this screwup.

FIX THIS PROBLEM NOW BEFORE IT HITS APPLE'S BOTTOM LINE.

- Howie

Have you tried this testing with only Safari. Don't open Chrome, Firefox, or Outlook.

Even then, is your Flash plugin updated? Flash will suck memory and it is all over most web pages.

Eeek! you have a lot of stuff on a 2013 MacBook? Has this seen a lot of migrations?

I'll try to keep this short, see the etrecheck page for a longer explanation of what each section means

Make sure you have a backup before you modify the system. Reboot to make the changes take effect.

Delete, remove or ensure related software is up to date. You can backup items to another disk if you are worried about deleting the wrong thing, just make sure you remove the original.

Startup Items:

/Library/StartupItems/

Apple has been telling developers to stop using these since 10.4 REMOVE THEM ALL. They load at a 'system level' & can cause all levels of system instability. The code they load is almost certainly out of date. Update it if you are certain you need them.

Kernel Extensions:

/Library/Extensions/

These also load at a syslem level, except the kernel is the 'core' of the OS, remove them all, if you know you really need this software, ensure it is up to date.

Launch Daemons: Launch Agents: User Launch Agents:

Stored in: /Library/LaunchAgents/ /Library/LaunchDaemons/ and ~/Library/LaunchAgents/

(~/ is your home folder, use the Finders 'Go menu > Go to Folder…' to open the hidden ~/Library)

EtreCheck legend:

[loaded] - running jobs

[not loaded] - jobs that are set not to run.

[failed] - jobs in a crashed or unknown state

You have a few failed jobs, remove them. 'Failed' either means crashed or in the process of doing something not allowed. This is especially bad news when the job is at the 'system level' (any of the ones inside /Library).

Anything that runs in the background must be up to date or remove the jobs. Apps you use will try to re-establish the jobs, so you want to ensure they are current.

User Login Items:

Manage these in 'System Preferences > Users & groups > select account name > Login items tab'

Remove these & then check they are up to date when you decide to re-use them. There is no point in having login items when trying to make your system stable - they simply hide reasons for bad performance.

3rd Party Preference Panes:

/Library/PreferencePanes/ and ~/Library/PreferencePanes/

Application Enhancer <- this is a syslem level 'haxie' find an uninstaller & remove it!

You also have SIMBL - net.culater.SIMBL.Agent.plist (in the launch agents) it is another system level 'haxie' uninstall this properly too.

Update or remove every one of those prefpanes, some will have uninstall instructions that you need to seek out.

Internet Plug-ins:

/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ and ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/

Is there a Mac browser plugin you dont have installed?

All of those need to be up to date, remove them all & get the ones you need would be my advice.

Somehow all of this crap has managed to use up all 16GB of RAM & force the OS to write RAM to disk as indicated by the 258 MB Page-outs.

Reboot after changing anything in /Library.

Frankly it might be quicker to re-install your OS (erase the HD) so you have a clean 10.9 install.

This detritus has accumulated over a number of years, there is no telling what other old code is lurking on the system.

Re-run EtreCheck to see any items that 'come back' over the next few days, launchd jobs will be recreated by apps that get opened with preferences that want background jobs, that is why update or remove is so important.

Good luck, post back if you need clarification & let us know if it works.
