Mavericks seems to break Scanner compatibility.

I can't use my high speed Canon DR2010c scanner after upgrading to Mavericks. It's not being recognized by Image Capture and there are no Canon-supplied TWAIN drivers since (according to Canon) Apple supplies the drivers. The scanner shows up in System Profiler.

According to other posters, Epson scanners are having the same issue.

Help is appreciated.

Jan Egil at http://janegil.net/2014/01/twain-scanners-in-os-x-maverick/ has provided a package to install the OS X 10.8 System application TwainBridge.app v. 8.0, © 2000-2011 Apple Inc. in the folder /System/Library/Image Capture/Devices/ .

Installing TwainBridge.app, and “TWAIN SANE Interface for MacOS X” by Mattias Ellert http://www.ellert.se/twain-sane/, I was able to use my CanoScan LiDE 20 scanner under Mavericks in all image capture applications. So I suggest this might also solve some of the problems reported in this discussion thread.

I also suggest Apple should resume providing TwainBridge.app in further updates of Mavericks and later systems. (I just updated to OS X 10.9.3 and TwainBridge.app disappeared, so I had to reinstall it to be able to see my scanner again.)

PS: It's unfortunate that Canon has clearly made a commercial decision not to update 32bit drivers for 64bit-only operating systems like Mac OS X 10.n (n > 6) and Windows 7. This is presumably designed to force people to buy new scanners even if their old ones are still working fine.

PPS: SANE doesn’t support all old scanners, unfortunately. To get my CanoScan 5000F to work I had to install a “virtual machine” running OS X 10.6 (using Oracle’s free VirtualBox, plus I had to install “VirtualBox 4.3.12 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack” in VirtualBox and turn on USB 2 support to stop the Virtual Machine crashing as soon as ToolBox started communicating with the 5000F). This may seem like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut, but it has the added virtue that I can use my old PowerPC apps without having to reboot into Snow Leopard (-:
