New iMovie won't update previous project and events

When I upgraded iMovie, I delayed updating my projects. Now, when I click "Update Project and Events" I get a message saying iMovie can't find any projects, however, they are in my iMovie Events and iMovie Projects folder from the previous version. Help

iMovie (iOS), iOS 7.0.3

I'm getting the same problem on my imac where most of my iMovie projects are held. I can use the latest version on my MacBook Pro as there's no real history from earlier version. So whilst the new iMovie finds the various locations where events are stored it then seems to stall so I continue to use the old version. I've never experienced these sort of problems with an upgrade of this type before.

After trying all these suggestions I get to a stable point. Although the updated projects only contains a new project that was created using iMovie 10, so I've got it on iMovie Library 1TB and iMovie Library 11.

I then try importing new video clips and the latest version of iMovie now thinks the external drive (WD 1TB Media) where I save movies is a camera so I can't browse folders like a normal drive! It's getting frustrating - come on Apple!
