Lacie external HD not 'spinning down' when Mac is put to sleep

Installed Mavericks on my late 2009 27" iMac and all seems to be running fine, except now my external Lacie d2 Quadra 1TB HD doesn't spin down properly when the mac is put to sleep.

Previously both mac and HD would spin down to silent when the former is put to sleep, but now the Lacie stays whirring away happily all night.

I connect through Firewire 800, and strangely when I swap the connection to USB2 the drive spins down properly as it should, but I'd rather not connect in this way as I prefer the faster speeds and freed up USB port.

I've tried installing a firmware update from the Lacie website but that keeps throwing up an error and I can't apply the patch.

Anyone find anything similar happening for them since they installed the new OS?

Hey Deo

I have a Lacie d2 3TB ext drive connected to a Macbook Pro Mid2012 running Mavericks 10.9.2 .Although I dont have issues with the drive going to sleep when I close the lid on my macbook I am concerned about the excess spinning when the macbook is on (being used) and the drive is not being accessed. I have checked (ticked) the "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" option in Preferences>Energy Saver but it continues to spin.😢

I see this discussion started off with OS X Mavericks, but I am here to tell you that even under the latest version of El Capitan, my OWC Mercury Elite Pro enclosure (purchased recently in Dec. 2015) with 1TB HDD inside will not sleep/spin-down when I put my iMac11,1 to sleep. It's connected to the Mac via FW800. It's laughable that after all this time no one has found a solution other than "just buy a new Mac and connect it via USB3 instead." Is there no third party app or trick to force external FW800 drives to spin-down automatically when the Mac sleeps?
