Mavericks Crashing my iMac 2012

I have a 2012 iMac. Worked fine until today. Installed Mavericks and it seems to crash after just a few minutes of use. Thought it might be just Safari or emil, but after a process of elimination, it seems to crash whenever it wants.....few minutes of use.

I tried a Safe Boot mode, but it crashed half way through the process.

Just got off the phone with Apple... tested the disk, went through 3rd party software....nothing running that shouldn't be.

Need some help on this one. I'm surprised it let me go this long without crashing.

It was so good to read this thread and to know I am not the only one suffering after the Mavericks update - that there is an issue out there and it's not something peculiar to just my laptop.

Afraid, though, that I am going to contribute some info here that might upset the logic in finding a solution, but hope that it gets us farther down the path to one: my MacBook Pro has been crashing daily, too, since Mavericks and it is incompatible with software I rely on, such as older versions of Endnote, so I have lost LOTS of work time trying to sort this out and rebooting after crashes.

However, the software I was running each crash was not the same as the software you all mentioned, I only have the one [internal] montior, no externaldrives, and my settings, as applescott so helpfully suggested changing, were already set that way, so that sort of eliminates that setting fix. The software I was running included, though not all at once, and not every time: Word, Flash, iTunes, iCal, Safari, Wifi on or off - no difference, Endnote 7, Zotero and/or Mendeley (the latter three which I only installed to find a solution to the Endnote problem).

Apple were not really able to help, nor did they seem to think there was an Apple-wide problem; he said he had never heard of Mavericks and crashing troubles?!?!?! My IT guy at work had no clue. In light of this info: Has anyone had similar issues? If so, were you able to narrow-down the cause and/or find a solution?

Many thanks

🙂

Qpie Doll - It would be helpful if you posted your crash log report, as that would help others to make suggestions. Without it, we don't really know what is causing the crash, other than it's likely a Kernal Extension issue, as this seems to be the case. As for Apple support being 'unaware' of issues, hmm...since there are hundreds upon hundreds of posts with regards to this, it seems unlikely. If a tech is unaware of issues, it means he or she isn't really a great tech, in my opinion, as there are loads of posts about this issue. All a tech would have to do is google 'kernal panic with mavericks' or something like 'mavericks constantly restarting' and they'd have a lovely pool of information from which to educate themselves. Malarky, I say. They know there's an issue, they just won't admit it.

Please include a crash log in a future post - from that we can see what kernal extension last loaded and take a shot at helping you resolve your issue.

Good luck.

Hi Qpie Doll

If your issue is that your computer is randomly restarting, one of the first things that should come up is a report, with the option to send to Apple. You can look back at other posts to see what this report looks like. It usually has information about kernal panics, which is very helpful as it indicates when the computer crashed and what was last loaded. If your computer shuts down by itself in the future, or crashes, the report should come up once you enter your password upon reboot. Copy that report and paste it to a forum, as this will help people diagnose what's happening. If this doesn't happen, please give more details about how your system is crashing when you're using it.

Cheers!

Hi and many, many thanks. I am trying to go through and find and update or delete old software.

No, it was not randomly restarting, but randomly freezing up, not even keyboard, so couldn't frocequit anything. Just two minutes ago, though, it crashed:

Well, just an update: I have been one of those people who simply updated the OS overtop the previous OS. Cleaned up the best I could, but always kept the old files there for the most part.

Anyway, it seems somewhere on my drive was a software conflict. So I made sure everything was backed up properly and then wen nuclear on my machine.

Wiped it all out, fresh start, new OS, reinstalled everything (far less painful than I thought it would be with iCloud) and boom.....everything is working perfectly. Love Mavericks now.

Long story short.....wiping it all out and starting fresh is a viable option after a backup.

~Cheers

Dec 26, 2013 10:41 AM in response to applescott

I agree with applescott that I sense it's something to do with power management or screen saving or window management. I have had multiple kernel panics and logouts and have had far fewer since I decided to turn off a lot of the power managemen, screen saving and security features as described. I still have the occasional issue (yesterday whilst I looking at Dashboard) but it is much better. I have also stopped SugarSync running at startup as this I know to be a frequent culprit, and again here I think it is contributing.

I have a late 2013 iMac (two weeks old). John
