rudlab. WORKED. Thanks for making life easy.
Perfect thanks. That did the trick for me also.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! At first, I was like Norman, and it didn't work properly. After rereading it the second time and clicking on the lock in the upper-left first and then making the change and then it asks for the password and then closing the lock to then click on it again and make the change. It immediately worked!!! After spending 2 hours on the phone w/ AppleCare, repairing the disk, and repairing my permissions, this is what worked!!!!!!!!
Yep, that worked for me, too. Weird, but it worked.
Works great now, think you.
I did this too and it did work, Cudos!
My question is why does Apple not have a fix for this and how does this affect security settings? I am trying to learn more about the certificate settings but they seem confusing to me.
Thanks all for the guidance on how to solve this. I had the same problem; couldn't change to Systam Defaults -- settings kept reverting itself.
So, I tried setting it to "Never Trust" -- you are required to enter the admin password. Then go to the same setting and switch to "System Defaults" -- again you will be required to enter the admin password.
Then, the setting stuck. Not sure if that will fix it for you but it did me...good luck!

Thanks rudlab - that's dogged me for too long 😊 There was one slight confussion - for me - Before selecting "Certificates" at the bottom of the pane [Category] select "System" in the [Keychains] pane - then the Verisign-G5 for System is visible.
Rudlab,
Fine solution!
Very well done ol' chap.
Cheers
Pierre
Thank you this finally worked for me. Now I have iBooks working like everyone else.. been all this time since Mavericks release without it.
Thank you, Rudlab. That did indeed work and allow me to log in to iBooks. However, I notice several other Certificates in there that have "custom settings" - many with foreign names. Should they all be re-set to System Default? Thanks.
I don't understand because it does not work for me 😟 i checked and checked again. I changed it to 'Use System Defaults' but I still cannot connect to the IBook Store, and I have the same problem with the Map Application. However, it seems to work for everyone, that's strange. Can anyone help me? thanks
i also have another message when opening the App Store Application:
"Can't connect to the Apple Software Update server"
it seems that i cannot access any server, any idea why? i restarted many times as well, nothing will do. I do have the problem from the beginning, since I bought the computer actually.
This worked for me as well. Step 5 is indeed essential.
Thanks rudlab, it worked!!! Your instructions were completely comprehensible to even a computer novice like me! What exactly are these certificate things? Mike
