Can 2009 MacBooks run airplay with mavericks upgrade? not a macbook pro

This may be a dumb question, but is Airplay mirroring supported from these older MacBook Pro's now with Mavericks? When I say Airplay Mirroring I really mean the screen sharing feature they tote for Mavericks. I have the Airplay logo in my itunes and am able to play on the Apple TV or both from my computer, but no icon in the menu bar.

If you do want to Airplay with your MacBook there are third party apps in the app store that enable you to do this (paid of course).

Airparrot is the best I know of. I believe it cost about 10 dollars. I used it on my white mid 2009 MacBook and it worked. Not as perfect as Airplay, and I beleive it does not do sound, but the other option is to not have it.

The AirParrot is working well, with sound too. On my mac book 2010. cost $10

So does it bother anyone else that a $10 app can do it but apple can't just do an update to make it work? can anyone make sense of this for me? I'm an avid apple user but recently I'm starting to question my loyalty.

Come on Apple. Please provide an update so older Macbooks will be able to use airplay. We got an early christmas present of an apple tv, but I can't mirror my screen. Please fix this, I am not going to pay for another app when i should be able to use it on my macbook. Please help.

Same problem here, my MBP and apple tv have already been upgraded to the latest firmware yet. its really frustrating that the latest OSx is not endorsing what it claims. Please enusre the next update will offer airplay mirror on system before 2011.

It's not the software it's the hardware that allows AirPlay Mirroring. You need the I5 or I7 processor.

So does it means once I change my processor I will be able to use mirror?

You can't change the processor in a laptop. It's integrated into the logic board. You will have to sell the MacBook Pro that you have and buy a newer one.

If it's about the processor then can my mid 2010 17" mbp with i7 2,66 GHz model then do Airplay – even though the official list excludes 2010 models? I'd really like to hear the hardware reasoning from Apple why it wouldn't..
