Can 2009 MacBooks run airplay with mavericks upgrade? not a macbook pro

I upgraded my 2009 macbook, but can't find how to use airplay. I would like to use the mirror mac on my apple tv. Is this possible on my macbook?

MacBook (13-inch Mid 2009), OS X Mavericks (10.9)

No, this is from Apple Support:

AirPlay Mirroring in OS X Mountain Lion takes advantage of the hardware video encoding capabilities of 2nd and 3rd Generation Intel Core processors. Hardware video encoding allows AirPlay Mirroring to efficiently deliver high frame rates while maintaining optimal system performance. The following Mac models have processors that support AirPlay Mirroring:

  • iMac (Mid 2011 or newer)
  • Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer)
  • MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer)

Thanks so much Apple Support Community people!

This AirParrot application, only 10 USD is very easy to use, and it worked flawlessly for my mid 2010 MBP to do 'AirPlay'-like mirroring. I did not try sound.

Also, of note, I did use it on the trial period to make sure it worked, and then plunked down the money!

Best of luck to those who have run into this problem, and here is a worthwhile solution.

Two things I find really irritating:

1. The infomation on the Apple TV package and the sales info on the Apple website does not clearly state that you can't use an older Mac to communicate with the Apple TV.

2. Why, if there is a third party app that apparently works, doesn't Apple include it with the Apple TV package?

I feel like Apple is misleading their customers.

When third party apps can do things Apple wont support on older models is because it would be really hard to support all those computers that are backdated to 2009 or earlier. It is a newer techonolgy, but what i would say is that third party apps because OS does run on unix they can tap into the OS and enable features that normally dont work. It wont be perfect but it will still work.
