I just installed OS X Mavericks and the 3d dock at the bottom is not too pleasing to look at, is there a way I can set it as the 2D dock it is when it is one one side of the screen?
No, it can't be done.
You can file feedback here. The more who file the more likely it will get done.
Edit - I surmise my suggestion is not what you meant.

In terminal, enter:
defaults write com.apple.dock no-glass -boolean YES
then restart the dock, in terminal enter:
killall Dock

Mavricks must have changed something, sorry. It worked from Leopard through Mountain Lion.
I believe that there is nothing we can do at the moment. Been searching in internet for hours and there is no patch or solution for 2D dock! Everybody should give feedback , just use this subject "Please Enable back the bottom 2D Dock (with terminal patch) in Mavericks"
