What has been GAINED in the Numbers 3.0 upgrade?

Well, somebody has to look on the bright side, to balance the What has been lost in Numbers 3.0 upgrade? thread.

The new Numbers 3.0 plays better with Numbers for iCloud than the old Numbers, not least because the old Numbers doesn't play with Numbers for iCloud at all any more.

And Numbers 3.0 does bubble charts, something the vast majority of users surely have yearned for.

What else does Numbers 3.0 actually do better than the old Numbers and its competitors? Seriously.

Hi SG,

Here is an interactive Chart, created in Numbers '09 but now irrevocably converted to Numbers 3.0 (I did what I shouldn't, and edited it in Numbers 3.0. Bummer!)

User uploaded file

Type a number into Cell A2 of the second table to choose a week.

Formula in Cell B2 of the second table is:

=VLOOKUP($A2,Table 1::$A$2:$H$5,2,FALSE)

Copy Right, but change the return column number to 3, 4, etc.

Document is in my DropBox:

Hope this works. Regards,

Ian.

Hi Ian,

Yes, when I looked at it and at first glance I thought this would work in the old Numbers too.

I haven't had a chance to look into those new "interactive chart: choices in V 3 to see what they do that is different and how they might be useful.

For the purposes of this thread, maybe we can just note that they are there and on the list of things we think we have gained, and I can start another thread posing a question about interactive charts specifically?

I noticed a significant speed improvement. I took a 7,000 record Filemaker Database and brought it into Numbers 3.0. The previous version of numbers slowed to a crawl with that many rows, but Numbers 3.0 sorts, filters, COUNTIFS, SUMIFS, very quickly. I'm running it on a new MacBook Pro so some of the speed gain might be attributed to that but I doubt much.

While I certainly miss the CATEGORIES feature and the QFX import capabilities of old Numbers, I'm starting to like the new Numbers for its speed improvements.

Hi SG,

Good idea. Let's keep this thread aimed at your original intention: What has been GAINED in the Numbers 3.0 upgrade.

I have been thinking of starting another thread on changes in functionality (not features) in V3. I have not found any loss of functionality, just new ways of working. We need to learn where things are now in V3 (a bit frustrating at times) but that is just the old dog having to learn where the bone is buried now!

I will have a think about a new 'functionality' thread. I don't want to open yet another complaints department (perceived loss of functionality, because we must now achieve it in a different way).

Ian.

Ian and others,

The sharing function is quite powerful and easy to use.

User uploaded file

This is not just a convenient way to send documents back and forth to others. More than one user can edit the same document at the same time and each will see the numbers and charts change in real time. It's really come a long way.

There doesn't even need to be a Mac or iPad on the other end. Just any computer with a recent browser. There's not much more to it for them than clicking the link you send them. They don't even have to have an iCloud account.

With this capability many Numbers users will no longer have to spend valuable time fussing with pagination and margins and such to send a pretty pdf or printout or whatever. Just share and get some real work done.

This obviously is not for heavy duty use by big organizations or for situations where data security is a major concern. No password protection yet–at least I couldn't find any. But it already provides an easy, free, and attractive way for small teams to collaborate on "real spreadsheets," and for travelers to access the latest from back at the office.

Definitely something that even the most serious of "serious professionals" can appreciate in the new Numbers.

Added since last update:

- Easily add or delete items in a pop-up menu using Format Inspector > Cell > Data Format. Reorder items by dragging.

- Powerful real-time editing and sharing via iCloud with any computer that has a recent browser.

- improved speed and improved ability of Numbers 3 to handle large documents. Any comments from users to confirm this?

Previous list:

- Share is now a button. Nice and intuitive.

- Sort the contents of Sheets shown in Sheet tab pop-ups by selecting an object, Arrange > Send Backward or Bring Forward.

- Better cross-platform sharing/collaboration (between OS X and iOS).

- The alignment guides (for moving or resizing objects) remain. See Numbers > Preferences > Rulers.

- New ability to rotate axis labels on graphs (Charts).

- Improved management of custom templates.

- Adding a shadow to a Table is now a workaround. (Hint: slide a shadowed rectangle behind the Table).

- New ability to attach a comment to a Chart (graph), a Shape, or a Text Box (not just to Table Cells).

- New Statistics Pane (Bar at bottom) with many new auto statistics. Click on gear wheel.

- New Bubble charts.

- New Cell Format "Star Rating"

- Function Browser (with definition and examples as in Numbers '09) now appears in the panel on the right whenever you type = in a cell.

- Copy and Paste now carries cell formatting (for example, cell borders) as well as cell content.

- The Colours window remains and works as it did in Numbers '09. Menu > View > Show Colors, or shift command c. The full range of colours remains. Drag a colour from the patch at the top of a palette and drop it into a cell.

- Press Command Right Arrow or Down Arrow to be taken to the last cell, and Shift Command Right/Down Arrow to select all remaining cells in a row/column.

- In addition to Table filtering in the Filter Inspector, there is a basic Filter in the pop-up menu of each Column reference tab. Choose to show only those Rows that contain (in any Column) one of the values listed. More basic than the Filter Inspector, but quick.

- Many more Chart types, including some interactive charts controlled by a slider and buttons.

- Format Inspector > Cell > Data Format > Automatic or Number > Decimals, now allows Auto as well as the previous set number of decimal places.

Ian.

Hi SG and Fellow Numbers 3 Users,

In Numbers 2, it was a pain to add or remove Header Rows and Header Columns in a Table without losing cell contents (at least for me).

In Numbers 3, the Contextual Menu (shown when clicking on the disclosure triangle of a Row or Column reference tab) has new powers. Now we can Add Header Row Before (and after, if there is already a Header Row). Similarly with Header Columns.

Ian.

Hi Ian and others,

Among various Apple-related RSS feeds I try to scan, this headline from mac.appstorm.net caught my eye yesterday: Number 3: Spreadsheets for the Rest of Us Takes a Risky Turn.

Toward the end of this detailed and balanced article, recommended for all Numbers users, I saw to my astonishment a link to "The Great 2013 Migration Gained and Lost List" upthread and mention of "Yellowbox", who we all know has accepted the mission from Jerry of curating the list and no doubt, in keeping with his growing media profile far beyond the shores of Australia, is busily exploring the new online sharing features to update it.🙂

So I guess people are finding this thread as well as the (viewed seven times as often) What Has Been Lost thread.
