What has been GAINED in the Numbers 3.0 upgrade?

Well, somebody has to look on the bright side, to balance the What has been lost in Numbers 3.0 upgrade? thread.

The new Numbers 3.0 plays better with Numbers for iCloud than the old Numbers, not least because the old Numbers doesn't play with Numbers for iCloud at all any more.

And Numbers 3.0 does bubble charts, something the vast majority of users surely have yearned for.

What else does Numbers 3.0 actually do better than the old Numbers and its competitors? Seriously.

Hi Jerry,

Your Numbers 2 screen shot shows a Header Column already in place. With no Header Column(s) , Numbers 2 contextual menu:

Yes, we can convert, but no option to *insert* a Header Column. Converting is a pain, because any entries in Column A go into the Header Column, then (sigh) we have to copy and paste into Column B, remove the grey fill, remove bold text...

Numbers 3:

Done!

Ian,

If you are having a body column inadvertently convert to a header column, you are going about it the wrong way. If you change the number of Header Columns from zero to one, you will get a header column to the left of your original non-header column. No body column will be converted, it will just move to column B position.

Jerry,

In Numbers 3.0 you can add the first Header Column directly from the Contextual Menu, as Ian demonstrates. One step and you're done.

In Numbers 2.3 you can't do that. You've got to make an extra, multi-click, odd trip through various controls in the Table Inspector.

Which do you think is "going about it the wrong way"?

Agree.

Another improvement I found is in conditional formating. When I try out a conditional format, I usually do that on one cell before selecting all. Now, when I fonund the right conditions, I can "spread" that formating from this one cell to all others that I want.

To do that, select multiple cells where at least one has a conditional format, then the sidebar shows "combine rules".

If you miss "select all cells of this rule", see the little gear at the bottom, it moved down there.

In general, I think the usability of this feature is really much better. The only wish I have is that I could highlight an entire row based on one value, e.g. a date or priority column.

Hi papalapapp,

Thanks for this positive post. Thanks for pointing out the "combine rules" option where conditional formatting differs within a selection. Thanks for pointing out the gear wheel.

I tried your advice but first I had to create a conditional format in Numbers 2, then save and open the document in Numbers 3. Are you saying you have discovered how to create conditional formatting in Numbers 3?

Ian.

Not sure now whether we are talking about the same thing. I'll post a screenshot when I'm back on my Mac.

What I mean is to apply different colouring and other styles based on the cell's content. I don't mean custom cell format like currency erc.

Click on a cell and then in the sidebar in one of the panes there is conditional formatting. There you can apply conditions and pre-defined styles.

I can't do this in Numbers 2! Can you? Pray tell.

Unfortunately Numbers 2 doesn't have this feature either. But for maintaining lists, I find it very useful. It is a kind of visual grouping.

Just found another useful new feature. When you format a cell as a drop down menu, you can now re-arrange the sort order of the menu items in the inspector. And you can define the first value or "empty" as default value.

Additionally, if you add items to the list in one of the cells, you can select the others and "combine" them just like it is in conditional formatting. By that you can apply the list to all cells without changing the current value.

Another gain on conditional formatting:

The cell referencing in a conditional format can now be relative. As an example, if cell A2 has the format "make bold if equal to B2" you can copy (or combine) that format to cell A3 and the reference on that row will be to B3. In the prior versions it would have remained B2 and you would have to manually change it to B3.

Wayne posted an interesting example that (I think) illustrates your point about the relative references. Until seeing your post I didn't realize Numbers 2 doesn't do that. The conditional highlighting options in 3 seem powerful, with a bit of a learning curve, at least for me.🙂 Thanks for pointing out this aspect, which builds on papalapapp's post upthread.
