yup, it seems like the creative professionals are the ones who used labels the most.
the thing is, I know it sounds kind of childish. And do I really not know what the heck is going on in my project folders without a virtual highlighter pen?
Well, yeah, I can figure it out from the filenames.. but it’ll take longer and it won’t be as instantly intuitive. The basic “problem” is that colours contain information. A different class of info compared to text or tags that is used in a different way. Like I said- I don’t want to sort things by label.. I just want the label to be easily visible WITH the file/folder name it is associated with, not moved over to one side.
Usually Apple is good at understanding this context-based, sorta even emotionally-linked usage of colour.
When I say emotionally linked, I don’t mean that red means love or anything like that. Without emotion, you would not know to get food from the fridge. That doesn’t seem logical, but I’ve heard of experiments where some poor monkeys had brain surgery to prove this point. When you go to get food, you don’t use logic.. You don’t think “I keep nutrients in this rectangular white cooling thing and since I am feeling hunger now this is where I will look..” You don’t NEED to think, that’s the beauty of it. It’s an emotional marker. It’s like muscle memory.
I know this sounds sort of weird. But this is how labels work. I’m a designer and I name my files/folders very well in addition to using labels. In Mavericks when I look at a major project with many many sub-folders, I can of course still read the names, and with a bit of time I know where to go. But it’s like smiling or walking by manually moving all those muscles instead of just instinctively doing it. It feels forced, it's clumsy and inferior to the insinctive way of doing things.
