I hate the new tags in Mavericks, need coloured folders!!
Is there a way to return the colour folders when using the new tags like the old behavior of labels? These new circle thingees are too small and barely noticable.

Let’s get this clear. We’re talking about two different systems.
1. Labels, as in Mountain Lion and prior systems.
2. Tags, as in Mavericks.
Labels is for highlighting by colour.
Tags is for, erm, tagging by colour.
Different.
So let’s not talk about Tags any more here. It may or may not be a useful new facility for each of us.
But we know for sure that Labels was useful to us.
Apple are unlikely to reinstate Labels just because a few users like us moan about it. So let’s take a positive approach. We need a patch. Who could do this for us? Any ideas? Let’s get that moving.

Wow, great find. I am writing up a blog post now on labels and I will certainly refer to this. Thanks.
Sit back, young whipper snapper; here's part of what arstechnica's John Siracusa had to say about labels back in 2003:
Better to read their new review on Tags here:

A few days ago I wrote to the guys that make SideEffects, the color finder icon hack. They recomended I contact the authors of Total Finder, which I have yet to do.
I'm glad somebody else has noted the difference between "labels" and "tags", which are new to Mavericks.
By the way, tags do not need to be called by colours (Blue, Red etc). In fact I do not use these names because I can't remember what colour was for what. See my post of 30th October for an example.
Tags allow a system in Finder for grouping by project, including files in iCloud and on the computer, also from multiple apps.
@Hotwheels
yup, it seems like the creative professionals are the ones who used labels the most.
the thing is, I know it sounds kind of childish. And do I really not know what the heck is going on in my project folders without a virtual highlighter pen?
Well, yeah, I can figure it out from the filenames.. but it’ll take longer and it won’t be as instantly intuitive. The basic “problem” is that colours contain information. A different class of info compared to text or tags that is used in a different way. Like I said- I don’t want to sort things by label.. I just want the label to be easily visible WITH the file/folder name it is associated with, not moved over to one side.
Usually Apple is good at understanding this context-based, sorta even emotionally-linked usage of colour.
When I say emotionally linked, I don’t mean that red means love or anything like that. Without emotion, you would not know to get food from the fridge. That doesn’t seem logical, but I’ve heard of experiments where some poor monkeys had brain surgery to prove this point. When you go to get food, you don’t use logic.. You don’t think “I keep nutrients in this rectangular white cooling thing and since I am feeling hunger now this is where I will look..” You don’t NEED to think, that’s the beauty of it. It’s an emotional marker. It’s like muscle memory.
I know this sounds sort of weird. But this is how labels work. I’m a designer and I name my files/folders very well in addition to using labels. In Mavericks when I look at a major project with many many sub-folders, I can of course still read the names, and with a bit of time I know where to go. But it’s like smiling or walking by manually moving all those muscles instead of just instinctively doing it. It feels forced, it's clumsy and inferior to the insinctive way of doing things.
@Tony
not sure what you mean..? I have read the new arstechnica review, including that part. What's your point?

Cool, sounds like a good avenue. I don't particularly want the other features of TotalFinder, but I'd pay a few bucks to get labels back, that's for sure. I'd do it even if I knew Apple was going to back-track in the future.

All,
I just published a blog post on this subject. I would appreociate your constructive (or even destructive) critiques.

I love it, but then you knew I would 🙂 You could even add some images of the ios 7 calendar (I didn't update yet, but I'm told it's good and colour-friendly) and even the colour highlight feature in iBooks.. like I said.. Apple is usually good with this sort of thing.
Thanks Lar. I know I am preaching to the choir here, but who better to have insight on thei issue.
Images will certainly hlep. I just added one of Finder Prefs/Labels.
Ditto the feeling of the original poster -- I would much, much rather have the option to add tags but keep the old color folder system (which I use in a different manner than they're wanting to use).
hi laralyn,
i just had a great idea.
i am thinking that while we are doing away with color that we may as well get rid of the colors on conventional street lights and just make them all grey. we all /know/ that the one at the top is go and the one in the middle is caution and the one at the bottom is stop so the colors here are pretty useless. or perhaps we can put little small dots of color next to them and grey them out.
of course i am being facetious here but for me the argument regarding visual recognition and smooth operation is identical to this analogy regarding driving.
anyway, keep posting b/c my Mac Pro is going to get really, really old if i have this single issue standing in the way of my buying a new machine for the purpose of upgrading OS...
peace
that's quite nice tracy.
very well done and very well put.
regards.

If you're colorblind, that's pretty much how it works.
