I hate the new tags in Mavericks, need coloured folders!!
Is there a way to return the colour folders when using the new tags like the old behavior of labels? These new circle thingees are too small and barely noticable.

I do not want to custom colour my folders.
I do not want to give my folders custom icons.
All I want is to be able to use labels again.
Apple will come around to the error in their ways, it's not like Labels is the only issue with Mavericks
I don't think Apple will replace tags/dots with Labels/BG Colour simply because you cannot have multiple line colours and you can have multiple dots (multiple tags), which is necessary to their new search system and the way the OS outputs those requests. Even though i miss it much and would prefer the simpler labeling line colouring system (around which I organised my workflow) I don't believe Apple will go back to it, unless they figure a way to have informative gradients on there 😉.
That's why I suggested PF as an alternative, notwithstanding the fact that you are absolutely right and piling up 3rd pary softs in your machine to do things that SHOULD be there in the first place isn't right. My suggestion to Apple (yes, I'll use that feedback link thx, no need to post again, ahah) would be to allow the user to choose between Labels and Tags or have BOTH but then you'd need shorter labels (the size of the filename not the finder columns) and the multiple dot system on the right
Anyway, you probably can fix this with some unix tricks—people just haven't directed their full wits to tweak 10.9 yet...
This said, I'd much prefer Labels if only 1 choice was given. Just like the active selection background on the folders/files which is too big now (even though you can see why they went for bigger bg's). Lion's was better looking.

Yes, does present an interface challenge to have dumb dots and name highlights together. The difficulty of the two coexisting is likely what led to the death of Labels. Talk about baby and bathwater.
But it is not an insurmountable problem. There are multiple possible solutions. Someone here earlier recommended putting the dots on their own separate column. If Apple just did this, it would leave the name column available for hilighting, and one could rearrange the dots to be in front of the filenames. That would help associate the colors with the file names instead of the variable space separation issues.
But Apple doesn't need us recommending interface solutions. They do however need to hear us complain, as loud as possible through the feedback system.
also you could put the dots at the end like now but with the first label highligthin the name.
or puting the dots betwwen the icon and the name...
or put the dots inmediatly after the name...
ok, no one of this has much sense, but these dots are less usefuls than the other system!
who wants to have all the zillions of red labels files in a shortcut from the sidebar!!!!!????
whats the point???
Apple could save face by retaining Tags for those who want to use it - by the looks of the feedback here those users are limited to the technies within Apple - don't know anyone outside of Apple who likes them - anyways... keep Tags but bring Labels back - all Labels does is colour the Folders/Filenames... and that's all we want. All Tags does is add metadata to the item which can be completely separate as you have noted above, and let Apple further develop this until they get it right... apparently the searching doesn't work anyways, so problems need to be fixed there for sure.
Labels simply and absolutely positively *MUST* be reinstated.
Apple clearly does not understand how people in the real world manage their folder/file hierarchies, otherwise they wouldn't have messed with it.
Steve jobs must be rolling around in whatever entity he currently exists. ;-)

3 options:
1) Go back to Mountain Lion
2) Use Pathfinder (or another 3rd Party solution)
3) Wait a few months to see if Lables are brought back
That's it. Good luck.
I agree, Path Finder totally overrides the Finder, not such a great option.

Why not?
Tony, it's cold comfort to have to think we need to revert back to any previous OS, the whole point of upgrading the OS is to see marked improvement. I went from Snow Leopard, so I'm not about to jump back that far. Pathfinder is an app that rides on top of the Finder, no offense to the makers, but that's cludgy to say the least. I have not done OS modifications like this since OS 6-9. As far as having to wait for Apple, the whole reason people are expressing their displeasure is to let Apple know we do not expect to wait that long for this to be fixed, for Labels to be reinstated alongside Tags, as long as it does just what we need. Tags do not need to be coloured - what's the point of a dot? It is visually pathetic. I have 10-20 projects on the go at any given time - all of these folders are now currently useless in terms of tracking progress - my folders and files, like many other people who have posted on here, are organized by Labels and this has been a part of the Finder for so long it should never have been tampered with. Tags is pathetic in terms of visual interpretation of file management. And apparently Tags doesn't work properly according to other posts. So, thanks for the three steps, Apple simply needs to take the only step necessary.. fix their glaring oversight and do so immediately. Steve Jobs would not be pleased. Thanks.

I hope everyone who hates Tags has posted to Apple's feedback form... the more who do hopefully the faster it will be resolved.
Make sure you state that Labels is a necessary component of your file management and that the Tags "dot" is not sufficient, and while Tags may be here to stay, there is no reason Labels cannot co-exist for those who want to see their folders/filenames colour-coded.

What you are failing to understand is that there is no mention of this being an 'oversight' and may well be the dumbing down of a feature not used by enough people to warrent it being kept in it's previous functioning state. Apple change these things quite often in new OSXs and you will always find a small percentage of people in a Troubleshooting forum such as this screaming blue-murder, conspiracy and blaming changes on Steve Job's passing, which is ridiculous because he himself implemented many radical changes in the GUI.
You say you do not wait to expect long for this to be fixed. There is nothing to be 'fixed' as such. It will be up to Apple to 'reimplement' the old feature if number of users complaints warrent it. Judging by ony a small amount of people complaining here, compared to the many many millions who have downloaded and installed it and either don't miss it, have never known it, or are capable of moving on quickly by making adjustments to their workflow. No feature in ANY OS is beyond touch in this ever changing world, and I really don't know of any company who bows to a tiny percentage of it's users demands.
But, hey, who knows what the future holds. In 5 years we may not even have a Finder!
So don't take these Troubleshooting forums as a true representative of the users either having problems or complaining of the loss of a feature. There are still people screaming about the loss of Rosetta and 'Bounce' in Mail almost three years ago, for goodness sake.
Cheers
Pete

Yeah, that's telling them 🙂

And maybe Apple will one day bring back Labels.
But, this is not a bug. Apple does listen to user requests, but to think that this will be "fixed" immediately is an unrealistic expectation on your part.
If highlighting filenames with colors are a "necessary component of your file management", then you need to find an alternative.
It's changes like this that reinfornce a belief I've had for several years now:
More and more, I think Apple is turning its back on its more established professional users who use computers to get work done, and focusing their efforts almost entirely on what they view as a newer generation of more consumer-oriented users. In other words, their new focus is more on the YouTube videographer than the established professional film editor, or the person who downloads tons of music, vs. the professional musician, etc.
By the way, I'm not putting anyone down for how they use a computer, just pointing out the different focus of user I think Apple concentrates more on.
So I'm sure there's a whole slew of newer Mac users who've only been using Apple products a few years, who could care less about a "minor detail" like color labels. Or a window shade. Or support for a bunch of PCIe cards for audio or video tasks. etc. etc...
To those of us who've been using MacOS for 10, 15, 20+ years, we've come to rely on the "minor details" that help us get an actual task done, not just download another hip track on iTunes. Sure, you don't need color labeling for the later, but what about if you're using a computer to organize the output of your photography studio, or log footage on a movie shoot or keep audio organized on a large scale recording project, or keep track of thousands of business document files, etc...
Eh, those things are 'old school' and no longer Apple's main focus. More people are consumers than producers, so forget the producers and cater mostly to the consumers.
I personally have one major problem with this (other than hating it when Apple kills off things I need, like color labeling): I think it's short-sighted.
Even if the focus of selling computers shifts almost entirely to consumers, there's no reason to toss away the producers, even if there's fewer and fewer of us. For example: someone who could care less about color labels isn't harmed by leaving them alone, they can use or not use them, the person who needs them will use them. Both are happy.
And eventually, (for example) the person who uses a Mac just to use FaceBook and listen to music gets a really good camera, then starts to get good with it, then wants better more feature-rich tools in a computer and OS to process them... until one day that same person is themselves using all the same pro-level features that maybe they once didn't care about. So to toss out function that a person may eventually come to need and use, is just short-sighted.
I wish, if Apple's goal is just to cater more and more to the consumer user, they'd realize that many of today's consumers, are tommorows pros in many fields. Elminate or dumb-down everything too much, and you'll eventually leave those same people in the lurch, with nothing to grow into, even as you think you're forever catering to them.

ditto. i never imagined i would get a chance to say this but i am very happy at this point that my mac pro is stuck on Mountain Lion and i cannot upgrade it beyond this OS. if i had the opportunity to also upgrade the desktop, i would have - and i can only imagine how absolutely mind-boggling and frustrating this would make my normal workday/workweek.
