I hate the new tags in Mavericks, need coloured folders!!

to supply you witth an answer: I seem to recall someone in this thread saying that in their career it's not advisable to be using outdated software. I'm in the same camp. Yeah, I could stay on ML for maybe another year or so at most.. but I don't think I should have to. In all seriousness, if Apple removed a feature you relied opon for your workflow.. would you be completely content to stay back on the previous version, knowing that at some point you'd have to bite the bullet and figure out a new workflow? Or would you prefer to deal with it head-on and find a long-term solution that allows you to keep working efficiently and be up-to-date? I'd answer "yes!" to that... Currently I'm waiting to see if TotalFinder will implement labels as I prefer it to PathFinder.

Hi Laralyn10,

If I might be able to, without being scolded for not wanting progress which is definitely not the case, labels mean a number of things to me.

- project folders, by company name, identified by the colour of the company's logo

and individual files as they related to:

- copywriting and editing - red being raw text, organge being reviewed, and yellow being copyedited by my copywriter ready for implementation

- web sites - red being unready files, orange being "awaiting client input", yellow being staged and ready for upload

So Labels are very important to my daily workflow as it is to many others, Tags is very poorly implemented because it does not provide instant identification, it's too small and insignificant, and no reason why that could not have been left to text-based metatagging, leaving the visual tagging/labelling along or working together

Simple as that.

You can't even name a feature in Mavericks that you need. You only want it to be up-to-date?

ML will be supported by Apple for quite some time.

Pathfinder will give you what you want now, yet you're waiting for Totalfinder to add Lables?

You're not "dealing with it".

Pathfinder.....simple as that (or ML, either gets you to where you need to be)

I like how the label colours change meaning depending on context- could be a red logo, or could indicate raw text in a text project. Plus the red-orange-yellow stages for writing and web projects are roughly equivalent steps even though it means technically different things. I think this is where labels excell where tags don't.

Tony, iDVD is old but still works fine. There are alternatives, but if you want to discuss it, please start an appropriate thread for it. This thread is already diluted and confused enough as is 🙂

But it's not up-to-date 🙂 (....I bought Toast when Apple dropped iDVD from iLife)

Yup. That is one thing that makes labels so useful and it's why tags are not an effective replacement. I'm sure tags will be a amazingly useful to many, but we shouldn't have to loose the power of labels for them. The two are like apples and oranges.

You don't get to tell me how I'm meant to deal with it, and you don't get to tell me that it isn't a problem for me just becaue I'm not "dealing with it" the way you would.

I shouln't have to do this, but, here are the reasons I haven't installed PF or downgraded to ML yet:

I want to be up-to-date with the latest OSX. As much as I may moan about it, I just like to be on the newest version. When you have a battery from 2010 and an intel core 2 duo, you appreciate CPU reduction. I know it might be silly.. but you bought Toast when iLife dropped iDVD, even though it still works. You want to be ready.

I'm afraid of any data loss that might occur since I've been using Mavericks for a while now.

I'm currently between projects and on holiday.. which means I can SEE that my work project folders are messed up, but why would I start my free 30 day PF trial when I don't need it yet, and I want it to last as long as possible so that it might cover me till a more affordable solution is found?

I also have some trepidation about replacing the finder. PF runs on top of the finder afaik.. I just think that's a bit radical. But I'll try it when the time comes.

Path Finder is a good solution for me on my HOME computers, but it's not an automatic solution at work where the studio has plans to do an across the board upgrade to Mavericks to bring all the computers in line with the same OS version. I pretty much have no say over that. In my case, I can request and pretty much get Path Finder at work as well, but let's don't pretend everyone will have the same option.

I really don't understand repeating the same "Just downgrade, just install PF, just don't complain, just bring up some other software" over and over again as being somehow less repetitive to this discussion, than just discussing the color labels issue. But whatever.
