Numbers 08 file will not open in Numbers 3.0

I updated my Numbers application so I could use the sister app wtih my iPad.

I try to open a couple of my 08 Numbers files and I get the following message:

"This spreadsheet can't be opened because it's too old.

To open it, save it with Numbers '09 first.

I can't believe that a newer version of Numbers can't open older versions. This is going to be a serious problem as we have lots of 08 Numbers files.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated. I find it hard to believe that I have lost access to the files. It is my understanding that there was an 09' and that Numbers 3 is 09 for the Maveric OS update (which I uploaded).

Any advise?

Update:

When you have iWork 09 on your Mac and you update to Mavericks, it will keep the iWork 09 programs in your Applications folder.

Then you will have the option to open your old files with '09 and save them. Next time you will be able to open your files with the new iWork version 3.x

When you have iWork 08, this does not work!

The trial version I downloaded does not work anymore. Now Apple is sending me a CD with iWork 09. That's nice, but I don't have a DVD player in my 27 inch mac :S

But I will figure it out 🙂

I had this problem with several files and only had Numbers 08. I found that if I opened the file with Numbers 08 and then exported it to an Excel file, the NEW Numbers would read it just fine. Much simpler than installing trial versions of 09, etc. I've got 400 spreadsheets on my computer! I sure hope that most of them will open with the new app.

This worked for me. Thank you. It's cumbersome, but at least you can save your document. Here are the steps I took:

1) Right click on the file you would like to open

2) Choose "Open with... '09"

3) Once the file is open, go to File and choose Export

4) Export into Excel or Word; take note of where you save it in your computer

5) Open the newly created file by double clicking... it will open in Pages or Numbers (depending what filel type)

6) As soon as you edit the file and save it, it will prompt you to save it with a file name and location. THIS is your final new file in the new version.

I'm also disppointed the new versions can't open the older versions. This shows a lack of respect for the people who have adopted the software.

I'm studyig my options now for all the files I need to convert. I'm leaning towards using Google Docs for most of my business items.

Good luck with your items...

Macliess,

I think I'm missing something. When I right click on a Pages file, the option says Pages 3.0.2. I then open the file with that option... then simply go to File > Save. I close the document... then double click it, but it gives me the same message "this file is too old".

Is my Pages 3.0.2 not the '09 version?

If not, I assume I'll have to use the trial version. Which I guess that means I would have to open each document one by one, right... and simpy save it, like you said?

thanks for all the info.... it's appreciated!
