Pages 5.0 and Endnote (Cite While You Write)

Hello fellow Endnote/Pages 5.0 Users!

I've just upgraded to Pages 5.0 yesterday to find that Endnote X7 is not really functioning properly with Pages.

I think its Pages 5.0 problem as concurrently I am running both Pages 4.3 and Pages 5.0 with same Endnote Library. Impirting citations (to footnotes and appropriately to Bibliography) on 4.3 works perfectly, as it should.

However, on Pages 5.0, I can import citation only in-text and not in the footnotes section (chicago style with superscripts). Further, it does not add to the Bibliography section at the last page of the document; as it did for 4.3 and Endnote.

Any takes?

This is very frustrating.

Apple does not appear to be acknowledging this problem. They posted a support sheet describing fixes and improvements they will make to Pages 5, but they imply under "EndNote Compatibility" that the link to plugin 2 fixes the problem. It does not. EndNote does not work correctly with plugin 2.0, as various users have observed.

I hope Apple isn't going to ignore this.

@haggibor: I feared that might be so. I am in academia, I write grants and manuscripts, and EndNote is required for database management in my professional writing. For "Power Users" the previous version of Pages didn't really play very well with EndNote, and although I developed a few workarounds, the problems were never really fixed. This was evidently Apple's issue and not Thompson-Reuters, and I say this as a huge and loyal Apple fan. I had hoped (still hope!) the new version would buff out the flaws.

For what it's worth, in working with (old) pages and Endnote X5 I found that references were inserted in text but were sometimes invisible. My end-run: If I switched back and forth between two journal styles (using "Manage Endnote Citations" in the "Edit" menu) it would correct the problem. Maybe someone who is having problems with the newer versions during "cite while you write" will have some success with this.

I hope there are at least some end-runs for those people who have already committed. If anyone knows them, or tries mine, please post. I would like some sense that these kinds of problems were addressed in the new Pages/EndNote combo before I'd upgrade.

I had the same problem (no way of citing in footnotes, though citing in-text works with Plug-in v2). To go back to Pages 09 from a document opened in Pages5.0: Go to file>export>pages 09. It will save the file in Pages 09. I did this and it worked for me (on a book manuscript; 400+pages). I'm back to Pages 09 until this is fixed.

Hi piamontealegre,

I've noticed this problem too. One workaround is to edit the style of one of the selectable ones that you don't use to match the style you want. It isn't pretty but works enough.

I only recently purchased endnote to start writing up my final year uni reports, only to have most of the functionality taken away before I get to properly use it.

Thanks BennyC92. You're right, I think that'll do the trick!

Unfortunately the problem is not solved. I have many bibliography styles to match different requirements (Thesis, journal A or B, etc.). So, we still need something more accurate than the actual Apple plug-in. I have also noticed the losses in Pages 5.0 that PeterBreis0807 mencioned, and they are disastrous. I think that our best choice is to get back to Pages 09, and I'm afraid that, if Pages 5.0 is so dysfunctional, they wont "fix it". We will have to wait for a new release.

I have been really keen to switch to Pages from Word. Quicker, more intuitive. But these problems seem to push me back to Pages 4.3 or Word.

I am running Pages 5 and Endnote X6. Have installed the Apple recommended plugins.

I can insert citations, but they seem to number randomly, appear in the Bibliography as a 1 then a 0... and cannot be formatted easily.

Have reported as a bug.

This is ridiculous.

Like some of the authors who have already replied. I have come to expect Pages to play nice with citation managers. As an academic researcher I use these program daily. Before the most recent update, I had been preaching to my coworkers about how great Pages was. I haven't had Word on my Mac for 3 years.

And how am I repayed for my loyaly? By Apple removing crucial compenents necessary for Papers2 and EndNote to work! Most of EndNote's power is being able to change the citation style TO ANY STYLE I WANT (not just the 6 provided in the plugin) with the click of a button.

I have a dissertation and a couple of publications to write. I can't wait around for a new release.

Word, here I come.😠
