Pages 5.0 and Endnote (Cite While You Write)

Hello fellow Endnote/Pages 5.0 Users!

I've just upgraded to Pages 5.0 yesterday to find that Endnote X7 is not really functioning properly with Pages.

I think its Pages 5.0 problem as concurrently I am running both Pages 4.3 and Pages 5.0 with same Endnote Library. Impirting citations (to footnotes and appropriately to Bibliography) on 4.3 works perfectly, as it should.

However, on Pages 5.0, I can import citation only in-text and not in the footnotes section (chicago style with superscripts). Further, it does not add to the Bibliography section at the last page of the document; as it did for 4.3 and Endnote.

Any takes?

This is very frustrating.

Hi,

I found the same problem as you.

It may sound ridiculous, but now this method can solve my problem.

1. If your pages output form is something (such as Vancouver style), it will run your numbers at Bibliography incorrectly.

2. You must change the output style to "Annotated" or something else by go to EDIT >> ENDNOTE CITATIONS >> BIBLIOGRAPHY FORMAT >> Annotated.

3. Change the output format again, now, into the format that you prefer (such as Vancouver style in my field)

4. Then the numbers will run correctly.

This all can solve my problem. Do you?

I suggest to use the forum to discuss about alternatives. I say so because I made some tests and, in particular, I wrote a short text using Pages Beta version for Icloud. The new Pages for Icloud does not work like the previous one. Now you literally write on their platform while being online. This experience told me that, if Apple's goal is to let us use their platform, then the connection to Endnote can only be successively abandoned. It would be too complex to relate the platform with a database installed on a local computer. This modality of Pages is in the beta version and unifies the older Icloud use with the old and dismissed Iwork platform. Even if this beta version and this modality will not be successfull, it will take ages before this will be recognized and discussed. I am not an expert but I suppose such a trial would take at least 6 months. And then, a new version has to be developed. We all complained all the time that Pages was missing indexing functions to make a proper editor out of it. Now we even have much less than what we had before.

Thus: let us discuss on alternatives. I do not consider MS Word as an alternative because it is too unstable. I am giving a try to Nisus Writer Pro and my first impression is more than good. At least, this is an alternative to write papers. Whether it is stable enough to write entire books I do not know. I did not try yet the import and export modules but as a 15 days trial is for free I would encourage you to do the same and give feedback or to suggest further alternatives.

If I understand you correctly, Apple's new model for cloud-based Pages will never allow bibliography database integration. That is, EndNote and similar software will never work properly with Pages. If this is the way it is, the best thing we can do is abandon Pages altogether. Without meaningful bibliography software integration, Pages is useless for serious academic writing.

I work primarily with MS Word right now, and I have not found it unstable, although it does slow down with very large files and extensive bibliography. Nisus is a serious alternative. It works well with Bookends. Mellel is also a possible alternative, although many will find its interface to be quirky. The forum linked by PeterBreis0807 lists many other alternatives.

It's a shame, because there is a great deal about Pages I like. But you can't make it be something it is not.

I have to wonder: MS Word has EndNote integration even though they have cloud operations and are moving toward having some version of Word in iOS. They already have a version of Word in Windows RT. Why can't (or won't) Apple do something similar? To use the metaphor of the truck and the car (first used by Steve Jobs, I think), it seems that Apple has decided to make Pages into a little sports car on every platform, and never a truck. So you will never do serious work with it.
