Pages 5.0 and Endnote (Cite While You Write)

Hello fellow Endnote/Pages 5.0 Users!

I've just upgraded to Pages 5.0 yesterday to find that Endnote X7 is not really functioning properly with Pages.

I think its Pages 5.0 problem as concurrently I am running both Pages 4.3 and Pages 5.0 with same Endnote Library. Impirting citations (to footnotes and appropriately to Bibliography) on 4.3 works perfectly, as it should.

However, on Pages 5.0, I can import citation only in-text and not in the footnotes section (chicago style with superscripts). Further, it does not add to the Bibliography section at the last page of the document; as it did for 4.3 and Endnote.

Any takes?

This is very frustrating.

In what way to CWYW citations not format correctly in Pages 5.2?

I haven't seen any significant problems in formating across a variety of output styles. The exception being formats that include doi information, which appears to trigger anomalous paragraph breaks in the resulting reference list.

Accroding to Endnote.com, "EndNote X6 and later work correctly with the updated Pages 5.2. We strongly encourage all Mavericks users of Pages 5 to consider upgrading to 5.2 to use the enhanced functionality and integration of Pages and EndNote. EndNote users of Pages should let us know if they run into any issues using Pages 5.2 or later."

In some ways, including editing citations in the text and adding prefix and suffix information, Endnote compatibility appears to be BETTER in Pages 5.2 than it was in Pages 4.

This is the full reference which elicited immediately 2 responses with details of problems still:

I do not understand why you would want to lose all the features from Pages '09, almost a hundred still, to get poor compatibilty with EndNote which is still not fixed after almost 6 months.

Masochistic tendencies perhaps?

I was happily using Endnote icw Pages '09 as well, since my update to Pages 5 I'm missing (apart from the mentioned above) the possibility to manage citations in the bibliography. With a 50 pages paper, the bibliography needs to be managed!

Normally you could go there through Edit > Endnote Citations > Manage citations, but the whole button 'Manage' has dissapeared! Meaning I can only select the whole bibliography, with either the option to delete everything or don't alter anything. Does anybody else has this issue as well? I'm running Pages 5.2, installed the latest plugin and Endnote X7 so I have no idea on why the manager is missing..

It does seem to insert citations in the correct format now. BUT (a BIG BUT) it practically makes the document so slow as to make it useless. I've tried this a bunch of different times and in different sized documents and each time, one citation in "cite-while-you-write" basically freezes Pages. So frustrated. One step forward, three steps back.

I was one of the early critics of Pages 5 and the problems it had with EndNote. Today, working with Pages 5, EndNote X7, and the plugin, I was basically able to make everything work to my satisfaction. It could be better, and I really wish that Apple would send a signal to academic users that they are determined to make Pages into a full and robust research tool. Still, I can see myself using it for my next project. Previously, I had abandoned all hope of using it.

I did not have the slowness problems antjek mentions, even with a moderately large file, and so I don't know where the problem may lie. I can only suggest that users try Pages with EndNote for themselves and see what happens. Meanwhile, I have got to finish my current project, so it's back to MS Word!

As a secondary note, I really hope MS will make some significant improvements in the next Word for Mac, which should be out this year.

I'm facing a new problem with Endnote X7 and Pages 5.2.2, besides the fact that using Endnote makes Pages extremely slow.

I have been working in Word up till now because of group work and the people I was working with did not have Pages, but now i'm about to start my thesis and want to write it in Pages. However, my Endnote will only sync with Word and Pages keeps telling me that I have to open a citations library because it can't find any. How to solve this?!

Hello Barbara

Despite its drawbacks, I would suggest you work with Word on your thesis. EndNote works really well with Word, and you probably will want the thesis in a format that you can send to a publisher when you are done. I'd love to use Pages, but Apple has not made the current version useful for academic writing. And you don't really want to deal with Apple constantly nagging you about using an older version of Pages—one that EndNote may not maintain support for.

Just my thoughts.

I think that's right - Endnote make no claim about itself working with Pages. The (bogus) claim comes only from Apple Pages for Mac: About the Pages EndNote plug-in - Apple Support

I'm failing to get Endnote's (X7 2.1) Cite While You Write to work in iWork Pages (5.5.2).

My APA6-format Bibliography comes out with the wrong formatting (e.g., 'and' instead of '&', and underlined Journal title, where it should be italicised).

APA6 still is correctly specified in Endnote's formatting options (so it's not just a matter of tweeking the format). If I right click a reference in Endnote and Copy Formatted, then Paste into Pages, the reference comes out correctly.

It's only when I use CWYW, that I get the formatting screw up.

Note 1- Pages09 CWYW does work properly (I want to still to new Pages because I'm collaborating in the cloud).

Note 2- I'd read on Endnote's Help pages that formatting comes out oddly with many fonts and to use either Verdana or Times NR. I am using Times NR and am getting the wrong format
