Iphone 5s battery drain even in airplane mode

I had the same problem. Battery drain with everything turned off on 5s phone. I haven't found exact cause yet but I remove home button connection from motherboard. and battery usage in sleep mode is now almost zero. Battery usage before disconnect just about match standby mode usage. Ordered new home button assembly but from other post that hasn't helped resolve probem. Will see for myself. Anyone else have this problem with home button draining battery in sleep mode?

Update...Replaced home button. No more battery usage in sleep mode. Solved problem!

I'm having this problem also with my iPhone 5S (6 months old) with iOS 9.2 on it. After spending many hours on the phone with apple and not being able to fix it, they sent me a replacement phone and I'm having the same problem with the replacement phone received yesterday. So I'm thinking that it must be the system software. I did not have this problem using iOS 8 software.

It's software, but not system software. It's some misbehaving app. Go to Settings/Battery to see which app it is.

If you replaced the home button on a 5S and Touch ID no longer works the phone will be permanently bricked with the next update.

Lawrence Finch, I just looked and the battery info only tells me usage and standby, no other information.

After you have used the phone for a few hours it will display the battery usage for each app that has used more than 1% of the total energy consumption.

Are you saying then, that even though it is in airplane mode, that some app is running in the background? I have everything shut off. All locations, all app, all notifications, cellular, background refresh, where ever I could find an "on" button I turned it off except for my email program and iMessage but like I said I'm using airplane mode. Before I had the phone replaced, I went over with Apple about this and at that time, the app usage was showing but only for home button and settings because I use iMessage once every other day and once in a while, I will download 1 or 2 emails. Mail is set to manual fetch. That's it. I don't use any other apps. Thanks for your reply, Lawrence Finch!

It is impossible to shut off all apps. And Airplane Mode does not assure that no apps are running. In fact, Airplane Mode can increase battery drain, because some apps that periodically send or receive data will keep trying and failing, because the phone is in airplane mode.

Ohhhhh, can you give me an example of an app periodically sending or trying to receive data so I can understand that better, Lawrence? Thank you!

I have all automatic downloads turned off. Could it be iCloud?

It seem to have worked fine for me. I think the key (not sure) to switching out home button is to make sure your have fingerprint reader disabled before you change out button. For me , since replacement, fingerprint sensor will no longer works for me , but I didn't use it any way. I have since upgraded phone from 9.2 to 9.2.1 with no problems. Maybe I got lucky.

Apps that use data in airplane mode are usually apps that were interrupted while sending or receiving data, perhaps by switching on airplane mode. With over a million apps it's hard to say which ones, but Facebook is famous for poor energy management. And yes, it can be iCloud trying to sync, especially if a sync was interrupted.

Lawrence, I don't have any apps except what came with the phone. I have never used Facebook, in fact I haven't even used Safari. I got the phone, turned off most of the stuff and didn't use any apps except for imessage and email.

If I sign out of iCloud, will I lose my phone contacts? I don't need to be connected to iCloud. I don't use it for my two computers and 3 iPads, I have it turned off and am signed off. The only two things I have turned on for iCloud are contacts and notes. (1 note only)

If you sign out of iCloud you will be asked if you want to keep your content on the phone or not. Even if you remove it from the phone it will be saved in iCloud, and you can turn it back on to restore it.
