Mavericks corrupts external hard drive

My WD MyBook studio 2TB (fw800) suddenly shows up empty on my desktop after a Mavericks upfrade on my mid 2009 mbp.

Disk Drill is now scanning the WD, and the files are there, about 1,4 TB of it...

How do I get the disc structure back?

I have no Mountain Lion OS-mac to test the WD in..

I had a bootable Mountain Lion on the WD, could that be the problem?

In Disk Drill MyBook has four units; EFI(200Mb), MyBook(1,8Tb), Unallocated 128Mb and Lost partition (200Mb)

I hate to be the one to disturb what people are figuring out, but I've just had the same problem, but not on WD drives. I have a Lacie Rugged and a Seagate FreeAgent firewire drives that were tethered and suddenly were empty and renamed and partitioned to "MyBook" and "EPI" after upgrading to Mavericks. The one WD drive I do have plugged in (via USB) that I use for Time Machine hasn't been affected (so far). The WD software I have installed is: WD Installer, WD Smartware, and WD Firmware Updater. That's it.

This is a massive mess up by Apple and WD, the sort of thing that can disolve any confidence in a brand. Let's just hope it gets addressed and fixed in a timely manner.

I had no WD software on my Macbook Pro and even after re-formatting it with Disk Utility the HD wasn't usable (orange icon). I tried updating the WD firmware but the installer didn't recognise the HD and didn't update it.

The SMC re-set worked for me; I then reformatted the HD (again) and then did a fresh time machine backup overnight. All OK and working fine now.

Uninstall all WD software and you're grand.

No, reports are that once the damage is done, removal of the WD software solves nothing but further problems.

So, you were using the WD software with your Lacie (seagate) and FreeAgent FW drives when they were wiped?

I've got a LaCie 4big Quadra (connected via FW800) and a LaCie 2big Thunderbolt (connected via Thunderbolt, of course) that are affected by something in the 10.9 update (they worked fine in 10.8).

The reason I believe this is due to 10.9 is that I bought a brand new LaCie 2big Thunderbolt to rescue the remaining data that I can still read off the other two LaCie RAID drives (fortunately, the data that I can read is my Time Machine backups). With the new LaCie 2big connected, Disk Uitlity shows the individual drives in each of these RAID arrays as being scattered between different RAID slices. I thought this was something I had screwed up when creating the original RAID drives, but now I believe this is due to something very strange going on with RAID drives and 10.9.

This system update has given me more trouble than any I can recall in the past (that goes back to the early 90s)...

No. I do have a couple of LaCie kexts installed but I think these are used by the LaCie RAID monitoring software (LaCie Desktop Manager). I don't recall installing any LaCie software to enable these drives to function under OS X. I certainly didn't install any software when I connected the brand new LaCie 2big that I just bought this morning.

Just to be completely clear, only 1 of my LaCie drives is FireWire (the 4big Quadra) while the other is Thunderbolt (the 2big).

One of the reasons I went with the LaCie RAID arrays is that no software was needed to use them (or at least I seem to recall that; been a while since I bought these). I specifically ruled out the Drobo for that very reason...

That's interesting – and there is no WD external drive involved in your case?

Also for the WD Drives you don't need to have any Software installed. The Drive Manager is just there to setup the RAID and monitor the RAID status (so it shouldn't be responsible for destroying the partition scheme, but who knows?).

I'm running the WD Mybook Studio II now for the last few days via USB (still in RAID 1) without drivers & manager installed, and so far nothing serious happened (still don't trust them though...).
