Mybook studio raid 0, empty after installing Mavericks

After installing Mavericks, my WD My Book Studio II connected by firewire, does not contain any files. It is a raid 0, after using the operating system while I wonder if I could use time machine to which I said no.

In this hard drive I keep my most precious files.

Forgive the level of English, I'm Spanish and I write through a translator.

A greeting and thanks.

I'm beginning to see your point here, Plotinus. And a ray of light (no pun intended).

Though forgottendiary has stated on page 29 here:https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5475136?start=420&tstart=0 that he has not exactly experienced the huge data loss like in many threads here, just (un)mounting and blank folder anomalies. And that his drive had been formatted with NTFS-3G/MacFuse ( which in my opinion could constitute another huge question mark).

Its completely sensible that this is causative since Mavericks core overhaul point was spotlight/finder

If Mavericks is trying to Meta-tag connected external HD data (RAID or otherwise) and there is either a partition structure, or software (WD) interference,...I can easily see problems.

Not being versed in Unix or BSD, nor OSX dev, I still have a hunch this may well narrow the search towards finding a solution here. Not Mavericks as a whole interacting with WD software or some unknown firmware; rather the Mav version of Spotlight interacting with the unknown factor.

And the fact remains that Mavericks alters/adds an EFI partition to otherwise healthy and running HDDs too...

Another fact remains too: all affected drives were only affected after a long(ish) time under Mav. Very plausible periods of time for Spotlight indexing to have taken place on HDD with enourmously varying amounts of files.

Well, still curious...

Nov 14, 2013 1:42 PM in response to Drew Reece

Perhaps the Spotlight indexing is preventing the disk from being seen by the proprietory software, in the same way it wont eject for quite a long time while Spotlight seems to hold up the process. (If you let the indexing complete for a half hour or so, the ejection is more or less instantaneous.) So perhaps the re-partitioning is a result of the disk software thinking the disk is empty.

I have had no problem since I always erase and re-format external disks, as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and re-partion them as GPT, before using them.

in talks with a couple code geeks, they claim outright that Mavericks uses modified OpenMeta to make their own tagging system.

regardless of repartitioned HD, most recovery utilities reveal most or all data present with loss of metadata

i (obviously) dont know if metadata is leading to corruption with spotlight... or if spotlight is encountering a cliff and causing metadata loss in addition to repartitioning

Mavericks tags are:---kMDItemUserTags

Openmeta tags are:--kMDItemOMUserTags

I DO notice that some external drives predating Mavericks are tagged without my permission or command

and a WD MyBook Studio 2 4Tb.

I've lost all my files, i'm very surprise and angry.

Please let me know the best recovery app,

Thanks Emiliano

i found also this tuts:

"I have solved my problem, and I have recover my lost partitions, and all my data!

My solution here, try and let me know if it get fix for you too.

Add "/Volumes" into spotlight privacy (since ext HDs are mounted under this folder).

So open up terminal and enter: "open /Volumes"

The above command will open a finder window containing /Volumes. Drag and drop that folder into Spotlight.

After that connect again your hard drives with lost data and lost partitions.

They will probably still don't mount, but you can go to the disk utility. You will see the partitions back but unmounted. Repair the hard drive, repair de partitions, try to mount them again... I had to try to repair two times and try to mount another couple of times... But finally I got my 2 lost partitons back!

My hard drive is a WD My Passport 1Tb with 3 partitions. Good luck!"

what do u think?

They should be fine. It is not happening to all drives, either. My WD drives were not affected at all and continue to work without a problem. I did not install any WD software ever, plus I reformat a drive as soon as I take it out of the box. Don't know if that made the difference or if it's random and drives are failing under some combinations of issues. But the drives themselves for others seem to be OK, other than the small matter of loosing their data, or having it hidden at least.

Cheers

Pete

My LaCie drive fell victim. I reformatted it and had no LaCie software on my system. LaCie has told me they dont see any problems when they test with Mavericks, so Im hoping Apple will step up. Thankfully I had another back up using CCC and was able to completely restore back before Mavericks. Im staying away until I hear that the problem has been addressed by somebody?

Nov 22, 2013 4:50 AM in response to Cumby

It might not be caused by LaCie's software, if you have the WD software installed there is a chance it can effect other makes of drives.

It still isn't clear on if it's 10.9 alone or 10.9 and 3rd party software.

I'd strongly suggest you install EtreCheck & generate a report (on the OS you restored) to see if there is any sign of WD smartware or RADI software is running, it's possible you have it installed from a long time ago if you have ever used WD products? It may not show up in EtreCheck if it isn't set to run, it seems using the WD uninstallers is the only way to be sure it's gone.

What was the disk called when it was reformatted?

Nov 22, 2013 7:55 AM in response to xboxtreme

I'M BACK!

after a week of trying to talk with the WD's customer service via email, i get the main conclusions, as realized from the beginning, WD hdd is only hdd producer, will not be responsible with data inside.

to this day, wd not give a definitive answer that after removing the old software/smartware on the laptop, is that save connect WD HDD to the computer. they just ignore that question over and over.the answer is always the same, please try this data rescue software, disk drill.

My case is different, HDD got reformatted, without a known cause.

My solution is :

1. remove all WD software from MBP, i think even with uninstall was not clean the background running software, there some WD software settled in system.

2. the data is gone, move on. don't use other WD's HDD in maverick. in one of them email, they said will be release some update, and who need that?!

Nov 26, 2013 1:36 AM in response to xboxtreme

Hi guys and Girls,

Yesterday Western Digital told that:

WD is happy to announce the release of WD SmartWare Version 1.3.6 for Mac 10.5-10.9.

Fixed an issue related to reports of some customers, under certain conditions, experiencing data loss when updating to Apple's OS X Mavericks (10.9).

Please feel free to post your experiences or questions in this thread.

This is the PATCH?

I just got answer from WD Support (Poland), they give me serial number to application Kroll On Track version Profesional - (I lost data at WD STUDIO, RAID1 1TB). I now prepare to recovery my data (I must buy disk and sata-usb adapter). They write that i must take only one disk to scan with this app. Qestion is what to do.. recovery or wait..

Anybody try to recover data by On Track app?
