Hi Sweddmarre!

Besides updating firmware did not sound logical to me (how on earth I can ask every Coffee Store, Airport Terminals, Work Guest WiFi and everty single device that I used to connect to upgrade de firmware) I did it, with no luck.

And as I mentioned in my last mail, when I upgraded to 7.0.4, the WiFi connected to my home router (before the upgrade) and worked for a couple of minutes.

So, my WiFi chip could not be fried. Maybe crazy, but not fried 🙂

After a long time on the phone to Apple support who agreed that I had a problem, but also commented that the new version of iOS hadn't caused the problem but only hilighted an existing Wi-Fi hardware problem and therefore 'disabled' the Wi-Fi part of the phone and greyed the Wi-Fi button. They asked me to go to the nearest Apple store to see the tech guys so they could ensure that it was a pre-existing hardware fault not something I'd caused (water damage or something).

I went along to the store and every employee I spoke too knew about the 'greyed out Wi-Fi problem' but no one would admit that it was an Apple problem. One person even said 'Oh, you as well!!".

Even though my phone is under a year old, I was told to go to the airtime network provider and use my consumer rights to get a replacement.

That's where I'm currently wading through treacle!

Andy.

Thanks for your advice TJBUSCM1973

Apple is a worldwide Company and I believe they should be responsabile for any item they sell, indepently where it was bought.

I had a defective iPod bought in Spain that I replaced in an Apple Store in Australia without any problem.

Let´s see what happen during my visit to US.

Unfortunately, my best bet is to move to Samsung or other brand, until they dissapointed me again 🙂

Depending on your country or purchase and/or the wireless provider that sold you the phone, the first point of contact (as agreed between Apple and that wireless provider) may be the carrier. For example, in the U.S., Apple & Sprint have an agreement where Sprint wants to be the first (but not the only) option for device replacement under warranty (or even outside of warranty). If Airtime doesn't provide the service that you feel you are entitled to, then contact Apple again, and explain that you want them to replace the device under the Apple warranty.

It's not the Apple rep 'passing the buck'; it may be the pre-existing agreement (which is probably delineated in detail in your purchase agreement/contract with Airtime) that requires this action.

They are, and sometimes, a local store may grant an exception. The rules of the warranty are often required to follow the local laws. For example, I believe that a U.S. iPhone can be serviced/replaced in Canada, and vice-versa. I'm just giving you a heads up to the possible situation, and offering a resolution option that WILL work.

I wish you the best of luck.

Try update your routers firmware

This is only a solution that MIGHT work under the following conditions:

  1. The problem occurs only on one network, and the phone works fine on all other WiFi networks
  2. You have already tried rebooting the router
  3. You have an older router that hasn't been updated recently.

Most of the people in this thread do not fit that model.

Yes, I know. That is why I thanked you.

The option to deliver my iPhone to Spain and ask a friend to go to the Store I bought it was discarded when I tried to reach them in Spain and they did not guarantee they will do anything because is not an Apple problem.

I´d rather take my chances in US and discuss face to face with the guys over there 🙂

No, I'm questioning how relevant a news story really is. You've probably heard the old journalism joke, "Dog bites man" is not a story worth reporting, but "Man bites dog" will get a headline every time."

Consider these two news stories:

"Recently, 300 million iPhone users upgraded to iOS 7. The vast majority of them did so without incident or inconvenience, and most of them are thrilled with the new look and new features and report that performance is the same or better than the previous release."

"Jane Doe of our town upgraded to iOS 7 on her iPhone, and she is heartbroken because she doesn't like the look of it, and she says she's had nothing but problems since the upgrade. She hasn't done anything to try to fix it, as that would ruin the news story that will get her name in the paper."

Which story do you think the editors will choose? Which one would you choose?

Did you watch the story or are you just going on what you assume is in it? It is spot on to what is happening to everyone's 4s's that everyone is posting about here.....wifi dead and battery drainage.

I choose the referenced story...not one of your fantasy scenarios

And have you gone to an Apple store or called Apple to see if they have an Apple solution, or are you just hoping?

been there, done that. Was flat out told anyone with a 4s and the wifi problem due to the upgrade is just out of luck.

I have no WiFi since 7.0.3 and I am still wating silently for an Apple solution....

I wonder how many people went to the store and paid for a replacement, upgraded to a 5 or 5s, is still dealing with the problem, or just went out and bought a different manufactures phone and never said a word here or anywhere? How many people are out there silently waiting for an Apple solution?

Hi Lawrence - I understand your position, but it is so hard to believe that a couple of hundreds iPhone were manufactured with a deffective chip?

Let´s say, if Coca Cola poison 1,000 bottles of a certain delivery truck and many people got sick because of that, as millions of people drink Coke all over the world and they do not show any sympton, the conclusion is that it must be a health problem of each person and Coca Cola has no responsability?

Here we are talking about a fact (iOS upgrade) and similar problem (WiFi) of many people, not two guys from Argentina and Spain complaining about their phones....

Anyway, I do not want to enter into any discussion, I am waiting to see what Apple does or does not next month. And relax! it is only money, wasted or not 🙂

How about the number who silently have no problem. They don't post, the people who do have a problem do post, so it makes the problem look more common than it is.

Huh? The people that do post make it look more common than it is? It's pretty common from what I see, and the ones that have been silent and still are only add to the common problem at hand.

Can you judge how healthy a population is by only looking at the records of a hospital emergency room?

Yes, it seems most do not have a problem so far, but slowly people are looking for answers. It seems like there are a lot of visits lately to the emergency room from people who ate this certain apple that is giving a bunch of us a fresh eating disease.....according to the records from the emergency room. Are you going out to buy and eat that apple and take a chance? How many people bought the apple, but didn't eat it yet? Will the apple grower take care of the problem or continue to let people eat the bad apples?

nice...If you paid for the phone by credit card, a lot of cards double the manufaturers warranty. Lets see how upset the credit card companies get when they have to start paying for new iphones. They have the $$ to get something done and noticed. We are just the little guys who can't fight the big battle I guess.

And some credit card companies have automatic loss/damage protection for your purchases. They don't complain too much when a customer submits a claim. They just either approve it or deny it. The credit card companies aren't going to pressure Apple.
