Emoji's Displaying as Plain Text

After upgrading to Mavericks, whenever I type out a smiley (screenshot: http://cl.ly/image/210a430a2d2k) it displays as normal, plain text and not as a smiley icon. If I select an emoticon from teh drop down menu, though, it works. But it does not automatically translate symbols into emoji as it previously did. How can I fix this? Thank you!

Hi,

In iChat and Messages 7 (Mountain Lion) there was a .plist in the app that listed all the combinations that could be used for each Smiley.

Even here on the Apple Support Community forums you can type colon, dash, close parentheses and not see a Smiley :-) but will do if you leave out the dash.

When I type the colon, dash, close parentheses in Messages I and offered a view of the selected smiley or a X to dismsss and send as plain text.

What the .plist did was to then call the correct pic and display it. (Plain text was sent in either direction and the App changed it if you set "Show Smileys")

Later versions of iChat and then Messages actually sent the Smiley Pic after pulling it from within the app.

Those Smileys have gone as has the .plist and some other arrangement is supposed to substitute the Emoji ones.

Although there is no "Show Smileys" option in the View Menu any more there is a Substitutions listed in Edit menu which includes Emoji (I can't work out though if it make any difference).

The smiley auto-suggestions only work for me when typing in an iMessage. They do not appear however when I chat to my colleagues via Gtalk / Jabber. Still plain text there unless I manually select an emoji from the little menu. meh!

I guess that's normal for now, Apple and Google just don't seem to be friends anymore considering the big issue with Gmail and mail app in Mavericks. Can't wait for 10.9.1 😟

Hi,

I would guess this is now somewhat similar to the use of Smiley Packs in iChat 2 and 3

Both ends had to have the same Smiley Packs (similar or Emoji they added many more Smileys beyond the twenty of so Apple supplied - the ones lower in the list tended to be different in different packs and then only plain text would be seen.

None Apple users have to have the Emoji font to "see" the correct representation of the icon.

I'm glad I found this thread. I, too, recently upgraded to Mavericks and was having the same issue. But selecting "Emoji" under the "Substitutions/Text Replacement" menu seemed to fix it when *sending* messages to people.

But now, despite having this emoji substitution option checked, emoji still come through as plain text characters when I am *receiving* messages. The person I was chatting with is also on a Mac using the Messages app - but has yet to update to the Mavericks OS. Does anyone have any idea how to get the Messages app to recognize/translate the emoji in messages that are received?

Hi,

Technically any Font choice by the Sendee will only appear properly if the Receiver has the same Font.

It would be worth checking the Font Book and see if there is a problem with the Font.

It is toward the bottom of the list and you may need to change the Preview Menu to Repertoire

The File Menu > Validate.

From what I have seen (and very few on my Buddies use the new Smilies) I don't need the Emoji item selected separately.

Yeah that's what I figured - I would have to have the same font as the sendee -- and in this case, being that the person is also using a Mac with the old iMessage emoji - I figured it would work. Alas. Thanks, I ended up checking the emoji font in Font Book and it was validated as being okay. And yeah...strange - for me, if I end up un-checking the Emoji Text Replacement option - it reverts back to simply displaying a smile that I type in as characters - as just that, characters only. They don't convert to the corresponding emoji character after I send my message -- but they do instantly convert when I have that option checked (even before I send the message). So strange that the issue isn't consistent for people and that yours works fine with Emoji un-checked.

Hi,

Someone using Messages 7.x.x or earlier (iChat) will be using Pics that are held in the app and are then substituted for the required keystrokes.

However if the iChat version is really early the pics are not actually sent but the app at your end does the substitution for you. (on incoming chats).

This gives rise to the ability to not "Show Smilies"

I have never been that good with text based LOLs and things and only use a few Smilies anyway (the pallet is more than enough)

I can't see I have tested this between older iChat and Messages 8
