Emoji's Displaying as Plain Text

After upgrading to Mavericks, whenever I type out a smiley (screenshot: http://cl.ly/image/210a430a2d2k) it displays as normal, plain text and not as a smiley icon. If I select an emoticon from teh drop down menu, though, it works. But it does not automatically translate symbols into emoji as it previously did. How can I fix this? Thank you!

Done that....

Tried a bunch of stuff (And I am really good with Macs!)

(including the substitutions menu)

Something more that I discovered....

If I type in the smiley in plain text, it actually works.

If I use the drop down menu, or receive one in a chat, it doesn't

I even removed the apple color emoji font, and reinstalled 10.9.1 to get a fresh one font file reinstalled....

nothing.

There is definately something of a bug going on here

The font lives in System/Library/Fonts, and is v 8.0d7e1.

(one of only 3 fonts there with an older Mod date than today.

I just disabled all non Mac Fonts

I am going to delete the font again, and reinstall the OS one more time - just to make sure....

Will update here if anything fixes it.
