After installing the Mavericks upgrade, I notice that my late 2012 iMac computer does not enter sleep mode, while my monitor does. The Energy saver settings are the same as before the upgrade (computer and monitor sleep after 10 minutes, i.e., system default settings). Has anyone else experienced this?

As of a few days ago Adobe Creative Cloud Clod was not compatible with Mavericks in that it conflicted with iCloud. It may be the problem or at least a contributing factor. Adobe may have updated it since then, or not.
I don't have it on any of my Macs and they all sleep predictably.
Pressing the power button for about 1.5 seconds will sleep all Mavericks - running Macs as easily as the key combination. Holding it down longer than that will summon the sleep / shutdown dialog.
Try posting the results of Etrecheck. It stands to reason that if all of mine are sleeping, so should yours, unless you have a model I don't and the sleep problem really is an OS X bug associated with certain models. It has been so in the past.
Larry Byrd. Before the safe mode boot, my iMac wouldn't even enter sleep mode manually. It now at least does manually. Unfortunately, my iMac, along with yours, has not entered sleep mode per energy settings since Mountain Lion or perhaps Lion...Apple is not going to address that issue either...
Creative Clod Desktop was updated a couple of days ago, and the problem persists when I quit it, but there is so much junk associated with Creative Clod that I have had it as a prime suspect from the beginning. Didn't know about the conflict tthough. Really hate that thing, but I am stuck with it whether I like it or not.
John, Thanks for all your suggestions. I tried your diagnostic suggested above and got the same "Sleep prevented by UserEventAgent" message as old did. I suspect that the failure to auto-sleep may be related to the 3 TB WD Thunderbolt external drive I have connected for Time Machine backups and photo storage. I tried checking the box in Energy Saver called "Enable Power Nap", and voila, my iMac now auto-sleeps just fine! The power nap option is new with Mavericks and is unchecked by default. I'm not sure if this is the answer to all the others having auto-sleep issues under Mavericks, but it has worked for me. To be precise, my monitor enters sleep exactly at the energy saver time, and after some external hard drive activity, the external drive and the iMac itself enter total sleep exactly 1 min, 22 seconds later (very reproducible) and remain in sleep. 🙂

Good, thanks. Power Nap will not prevent sleep itself, but changing its setting from whatever it was may have corrected some corrupted data.
If you want to experiment, de-select it again. The Mac should sleep with or without Power Nap selected.
My iMac slept fine with Both Lion and MOuntain Lion, its only Mavericks that ist not sleeping with. I hope this will be addressed in 10.9.1
Power nap is not an option on my machine (mid 2011 Mini) and sleep did work fine on earlier systems. Issue began the day I installed Mavericks.

After John Galt's suggestion to use pmset -g I took the time to look at the man page for pmset and found the option for "pmset -g assertions" which showed that the real culprit appeared to be : "com.apple.metadata.mds_stores.maintenance"
That process is associated with Spotlight, but I wasn't sure what it was doing or how to make it go away until I found the URL above. Am now reindexing my primary HD and we will see what happens next. Note that the author on that URL had the problem return after 2 days, so it might or might not be a permanent solution.
OK, the issue is definitely Spotlight related and the problem is definitely with com.apple.metadata.mds_stores.maintenance, but in my case it was not the primary HD, but rather an external FW drive. So, sleep is working normally for now.

The exernal media mounted does not actually prevent sleep, and Background Task = 0, sleep works normally unless some normal task (Time Machine, iTunes etc.) prevents it. With luck this will last.
In order to begin examining why my iMac didn't fall asleep after a proscribed interval of inactivity with Mavericks, I set up a new user account to test various components of my system. The new account's sleep function worked perfectly. Then I opened my original account and sleep work here too. If I logged off the new user account my original account still went to sleep as before. I found sleep works correctly as long as I boot up from the new user account—this properly would work with a guest account as well. I decided not to investigate further as I was more than happy at this accidental discovery

I just unplugged my external drive and my iMac went to sleep like normal. How 'bout that 10.9.1, Apple?
As noted above, in my case it was a Spotlight issue, though it must be acknowledged that it was a Spotlight issue on an external drive. Rebuilding the Spotlight databse on all of my drives has completely resolved the issue for me. Disconnecting the externals certainly would hve resolved the issue, but I need those external drives (3 two terrabyte external drives). Fixing the Spotlight databases did totally resolve the issue for me, and it stuck. To find out if that is an issue for you, typing "pmset -g assertions" in the terminal will tell you quite directly. If "com.apple.metadata.mds_stores.maintenance" is running continuously, that is what is preventing sleep, and it can be made to go away as described above. If "com.apple.metadata.mds_stores.maintenance" is not running, then it is something else.

Just when I thought my Mavericks headaches were gone (I had the Time Machine problem where backups were taking forever - it went away eventually). Now my iMac won't sleep due to the "com.apple.metadata.mds_stores.maintenance" issue. I have a NAS drive over WiFi, so not only is my Mac staying awake, the NAS drive is too. I'm almost afraid to try the fix above in case in re-introduces the TM problem.
Too many issues on these boards and never a response from Apple. Yes, I know they dont respond here (or anywhere else for that matter) but maybe they should. At least Microsoft have some representation on their boards. I feel like we're collectively talking to the wall...

I think you are pretty safe killing the Spotlight data and rebuilding it. It definitely resolves the issue, and doesn't really impact anything else.
i got the smbd process that is owned by root. any idea what that process is for and/or turn it off?
