.flv and .avi Thumbnails in Mavericks

SO yesterday i updated my Mac from 10.8 to Mavericks, now the problem i have is, in the FInder i don't see thumbnails for .avi and .flv movies, only for .mp4 and when i open a .avi movie with quicktime player it converts it to mp4 first (which takes ages on a only 5min long video...) back in the days, in Mountain Lion the progeam "Perian" solved this problem for me, but i still have perian (the newest version, checked updates 2 times...) installed.

what can i do to get those thumbnails back?

thanks for your help 🙂

Perian doesn't produce thumbnails or previews because QuickLook in Mavericks and later no longer calls the QuickTime framework that Perian plugs in to. QuickLook in Mavericks and later calls the AVFoundation framework instead, but this has no (published) API to allow projects like Perian to plug in to. Perian can't fix this - if it was fixable then someone would have fixed it.

QLVideo mentioned above works round these issues by plugging directly into QuickLook rather than QuickTime or AVFoundation. This works fine for thumbnails, but the downside of this approach is that it is limited to only producing static previews.

Your constant and condescending chiming in to let everyone know that YOU'RE past the issue is certainly not helpful to anyone. This is a MAJOR problem for lots of us who work in a PROFESSIONAL environment. The amount of time this costs us in lost productivity is not insignificant, and your casual attempts to diminish our problem are almost as annoying as the problem itself. If you have nothing helpful to add, just back away from the keyboard. Posting over and over about how you've come to terms with it, so why cant everyone else is pointless and unproductive. Just a lame and transparent attempt to feed your own ego and portray yourself as "above it all". Apple screwed up big time, just like it has so many other times in the past by pretending that their way is so superior that we should just pretend that the rest of the world doesn't exist. It does... and it still uses FLV and AVI files all the time. Good luck in your Apple bubble world... the rest of us have to live AND WORK in the real world.

Marginal THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

I have about 5 terabytes of movies and the other ideas were ludicrous. Thank you for solving this. It was one of my big complaints about yosemite. Your solution worked perfectly for me and was super easy and I did it in about 2 min. THANKIES!!! Big thumbs up and that solution!!! All avi flv movie preview icons were white blank squares in Yosemite. >: [ Now, I can now see thumbnail icons for all movies (avi flv) just like in snow leopard <: ]
