Can't get Mail in Mavericks

So I jumped on the "free upgrade" without thinking maybe I should let this thing get its legs first. Ah well...

I really like Mavericks by and large, but Mail suddenly isn't pulling AT ALL. According to Mail Connection Doctor, Mail is able to connect to the internet, but neither of my accounts (my Comcast address or Gmail--yeah, I know there's a story there) are succeeding in pulling mail AT ALL. I keep getting this:

Could not connect to this [SMTP, comcast.net, or Google IMAP] server. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the Account preferences. Also verify that the server supports SSL. If it does not, deselect the "Use SSL" checkbox in the Advanced tab of Account preferences.

Because I know some will respond condescendingly that I shouldn't complain when an upgrade changes things, let me say that I've already checked these issues and the settings are all correct--that is, they were as I had them set before the upgrade. At least, all the settings I can find are the same as before. Anyone else having this issue?

I have upgrade another MBP to Maverics and iMail can sync all email from exchange server by this one.

The same network settings and email account, but it works with another MBP.

Looks this's not 100% fail rate when upgrade to Maverics...

Although I didn't want to use Microsoft outlook, but this's the only way to recive email when upgrade to Maverics.

As I have fixed this issue on my Mac device, for your reference below;

Step to fix:

- 1. Disable/ delete iCould email account from System Preferences/ Internet Account/ iCloud.

- 2. Launch Mail application.

- 3. Enable Exchange server which would need to use.

- 4. Choose Rebuild from Mailbox.

Result:

- Receiving all mail from exchange server.

Verify:

- 1. Choose Activity from Windows on Mail application.

- 2. Check email account status.

I am glad you have fixed your problem. However, there may in fact be several problems with Mail.

My problem, for example, is getting Mail to access a POP/SMTP email account I have used for years and which is no longer possible using Mavericks.

I can't delete an iCloud account in Mail because we don't use iCloud in the first place (at least not on the Macs concerned). The Macs I reported use an IMAP mail account (which is OK in Mavericks) and a POP/SMTP account (which is not).

I upgraded one Mac to Mavericks, and the problem with Mail not accessing the POP/SMTP server was noticeable right away. I also checked/confirmed using my laptop (MacBook Air), which is also running Mavericks, and it can no longer access the POP/SMTP account. There are 24 or more other Macs on ML in my company, and we won't be upgrading any of them to to Mavericks until Mail reliably works as before.

I'm in the exact same situation as David, after my Mavericks upgrade I am unable to retrieve any of my POP email in Mail. It's the same account I have used in Mail for years and years, all of my email is still there, just can't retrieve from the server now.

When I go into Internet Accounts and select my POP account, it immediately asks for my password. I put in the password and it comes back as incorrect, which it definitely is not.

All of my iOS devices are able to connect and retrieve just fine from the same network.

I'm really hoping this gets sorted out quickly, it's gotta be some new setting or preference we're overlooking.

BTW - I upgraded from Mountain Lion, and ML was done as a clean install originally and had been working fine for the past 8 months or so.

I have this problem too. I upgraded to Mavericks a few days ago, and have just changed ISPs. Today, I tried to set up my new e-mail account and get exactly the issue you describe, orbitalcomp, with the system constantly asking for the password. It also asks for the password if I try to access the mailbox while I'm in Mail, and again, each time I enter it, it just asks again.

My ISP says I need no SMTP authentication, and on earlier versions of Mail, there was a check box with which you could turn off authentication. Withe version 7.0, there is no option for "no authentication", just a drop down list of various types of authentication. My suspicion is that this might be contributing to the problem, but my tech knowledge is not that great.

Hope someone can come up with a proper answer soon.

HI Guys,

Tried the above to Delete iCloud, Rebuild Mailbox and relaunch the Mail app and still i cant receive any emails on POP.

On the same MBP, i have moved to ENTOURAGE with the same server and connection settings and all my emails are downloading well.

What is this which i may not be doing right on Mail App, which is refusing the connectivity to my server port 110 ?

I think that there may be nothing that you can do, at least until Apple release 10.9.1.

After testing again, I confirm that our Lion and ML Macs continue to access the POP/SMTP mail server with no problems. Mail on the Mac with Mavericks has stopped working (we have tried rebuilding mail boxes, changing settings and so on, without success.)

I recommend that anyone who uses POP or SMTP for email doesn't upgrade to Mavericks until Apple do somthing to restore access for those of us presently affected (I'm sure Apple know, as they read this stuff, even if policy doesn't allow them to reply).

PS Those who wish to check that their email server is up and running will find a quick summary here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5477165?answerId=23533946022#23533946022

Guys,

I've been able to solve my problem, at least, though I doubt the answer is going to help any of you.

I'd raised the matter with my ISP's help desk yesterday. None of the solutions offered worked, so I deleted and recreated the mail account again today. Same problem. I rang the help desk, and this time, the (different) guy I spoke to told me that the format I'd been given for my username in the mail set up was wrong. We did a quick remote connection session and he changed it. Now everything appears to work just fine.

Only wisdom I can offer is be very sure that your settings really are correct.

Good luck with solving your problems, and thanks for the mutual support.

If you have more than one iCloud account using multiple emails, like I do, then the email that is not working is likely not your primary iCloud account. Disable the email account that is not working. Add a new email account with that same email address, but set it up as an "other" email account. Do not set it up as an iCloud account. This restored my email and everything is in sync. If that fixes your problem, you can delete the account information that was set as disabled.

I may have found the solution!

David MacDonald and I seem to have the exact same issue, and it looks like it only affects POP accounts, with nothing to do with iCloud. I don't even use iCloud, so the issue is definitely not connected to that.

Here is the fix for those of you not able to retrieve POP email...it's very simple, fixed everything for me:

- Open Mail

- Go to Preferences, then select Accounts

- Highlight the affected POP account in the left sidebar

- Select the Advanced tab on the right side

- Next to port (mine is 110, yours may differ), make sure the SSL checkbox is UNCHECKED

- Close the Preferences window, make sure and save the changes

- Mail should now retrieve just like in all previous OS X versions!

My SSL checkbox was originally checked and I'm not sure how it was in Mountain Lion, but unchecking it got me up and running.

Let me know if this fixes this annoying bug for you!
