Can't get Mail in Mavericks

So I jumped on the "free upgrade" without thinking maybe I should let this thing get its legs first. Ah well...

I really like Mavericks by and large, but Mail suddenly isn't pulling AT ALL. According to Mail Connection Doctor, Mail is able to connect to the internet, but neither of my accounts (my Comcast address or Gmail--yeah, I know there's a story there) are succeeding in pulling mail AT ALL. I keep getting this:

Could not connect to this [SMTP, comcast.net, or Google IMAP] server. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the Account preferences. Also verify that the server supports SSL. If it does not, deselect the "Use SSL" checkbox in the Advanced tab of Account preferences.

Because I know some will respond condescendingly that I shouldn't complain when an upgrade changes things, let me say that I've already checked these issues and the settings are all correct--that is, they were as I had them set before the upgrade. At least, all the settings I can find are the same as before. Anyone else having this issue?

Sorry late for reply,

Here I have try to re-upgarade my MBP to reproduce this issue on Mavericks from Mountain Lion.(clean environment to verify this issue.)

Step to reproduce the fail issue.(Mail can;'t sync up with Exchange server)

- 1. Remove/ delete all email account(include) from System Preferences/ Internet Account/

- 2. Add iCloud account FIRST.

- 3. Add Exchange account.

- 4. Launch Mail application.

--> Result: Mail can’t sync up from Exchange server with exchange email account.(can only sync up the unread email)

Step to fix this issue.(Mail can sync up all email from Exchange server)

- 1. Delete all account from System Preferences/ Internet Account/

- 2. Add Exchange account First.

- 3. Launch Mail application.

--> Result: All email can sync up from exchange server.

- 4. Add iCloud account back.

--> Result: iCloud, Exchange account can work normally.

After Exchange server works, and I try on the fail step, then Exchange server can't sync up again.

Here's the logs file;

User-Agent: Mac OS X/10.9 (13A603); ExchangeWebServices/4.0 (193); Mail/7.0 (1816)

Product/ units/ test cycle.

- MacBookPro/ 2/ 5 --[10 Pass/ 10]

- Mac Mini/ 2/ 10 --[20 Pass/ 20]

I hope this step might helping for your Exchange account works on Mavericks before 10.9.1 release.

joseph_chiu method solved my problem when:

Problem:

1st I couldn't send an email from Exchange SMTP I used daily over 3 years

2nd Mail start to prompted to enter a valid password

I deleted my Exchange account and tried to set it up again but it failed when I was online. I switched off the WiFi and was able to create one, however after I went online Exchange folders were successfully downloaded with all of new messages except my old messages (1 week old and elder). I tried to clean up some files in Maildata but it didn't work.

Solution:

I didn't step by step instruction from Joseph and Voila - my Exchange account started to work again.

One additional info - if you have several folders in Exchange account then you need to select each folder or all Exchange folders at once and then go and click to Choose Rebuild from Mailbox. Then each folder will start to load all the messages from the server.

Joseph, thank you!

Count me in too in Mavericks Mail problems. I tried a lot of solutions already enumerated and still having problems. I have no Gmail and no POP accounts but I do have one iCloud, one OS X Server (still 10.8), three Exchange and one IMAP accounts. I have all sorts of issues: Smart mailboxes stopped working - no email is showing (I upgraded from ML), sent email sometimes is not shown at all, sometimes only some is visible (Exchange sent email is never visible), most of the time Search doesn't work, etc.

Ocasionally, closing and opening improves things, but sometimes makes it worse. Also, 50% of the time I have to Force Quit off of the Mail app.

All in all, quite frustrating that one of my basic work tools is severely malfunctioning. I'm partially resorting to Outlook 2011 (which has its own problems) and webmail to get my business working, waiting for a fix.

After upgrading to Mavericks, none of my email accounts would authenticate. Mail Connectiion Doctor indicated no connection for any email server except the iCloud email account.

After a few days of trying different things, this was my SOLUTIION:

Opened my key chain and selected "Key Chain First Aid". After the run and REPAIR of my keychain, all email accounts work perfectly. Hope this helps others experiencing similar problems.

Glad to hear this worked for you.

I'm now puzzling how to do a similar sort of thing for my wife on her iPhone 4. She only has her email set up on that iPhone and on a wifi only iPad. The iPad works perfectly, as does the phone when on wifi, but when the phone is on its 3G connection, all the familiar problems of non-authentication start again. Pity Keychain seems to be OSX only.

I am having a similar problem. My MacBook Air will lose contact with the incoming POP server after waking from sleep mode. Sometimes I can get it to reconnect if I reboot, but not always. Other times I can get it to reconnect if I manually change the DNS server in the advanced network preference pane, but that doesn't always work either.

I have tried everything in this thread as well as doing a clean install, and nothing has solved the problem. This is incredibly frustrating as it has interrupted my workflow considerably. I don't think I will ever install an OS with a .0 at the end of it again.

Does anyone know how to downgrade Mac OS X 10.9 to 10.8 when you only have a Time Machine backup of 10.9?

I have a new solution to POP/SMTP access.

In my case the POP and SMTP servers were entered as an IP address in Mail. I changed these to the hostname and Mail started receiving and sending again. This is clearly a background change that has been implemented in Mavericks (the Lion and ML Macs I have work perfectly using an IP address).

If you use IP addresses for mail servers rather than hostnames then changing to the latter may solve your problem too.

Did the new Mail app updated this morning (was having strange Gmail issues which I hope are fixed). New issue has come up for me. I use IMAP for a majority of my business accounts as I use several computers and devices to check emails from clients.

This morning, I received several emails into one of my email accounts, replied and hadn't received any responses in the Mail app. Since I hadn't had any issues with Mail I thought it was my email host. I checked webmail and there were 8 unread emails sitting there that Mail was not pulling in. Closed down Mail and re-opened and they magically appeared.

This is not giving me much faith in the Mail app and will need to rely on my iPhone for checking new messages for the time being. Hopefully it was just a glitch and closing/opening fixed it. Fingers crossed....

This, unfortunately, does not seem to help in my situation.

I am running the Mail Update patch for Mavericks, but Exchange still won't sync.

I can sort of force it to rebuild up to a point, by deleting the Envelop indexes, even turning off the Mail option for my Exchange account in the Internet Account settings panel. I've even chosen to rebuild the Inbox and waited for hours. Still, my Exchange account is out of sync compared to Outlook and even iOS 7.

I'm trying now by disabling mail for Google and Exchange, deleting their entries out of the Accounts.plist file and adding back in just Exchange to begin with.

We'll see, but I don't hold out any real hopes for a fix using this workaround.

I do want to remind people that there is a Mail Feedback option inside of Mail. Use this tool to submit the issue to Apple for their consideration.

I am seeing the same thing...I have GoDaddy IMAP accounts and Mail just seems to quit checking. Even if I click the "get new messages" button, it doesn't pick up emails from the server. Quitting and restarting resolves it...for a while - sometimes minutes, sometimes hours.

Tried rebuilding mailboxes in Mail...didn't help.

A friend who finally had decided to move from PC to Mac returned the MacBook Air and went back to Windows because of this.
