Can't get Mail in Mavericks

So I jumped on the "free upgrade" without thinking maybe I should let this thing get its legs first. Ah well...

I really like Mavericks by and large, but Mail suddenly isn't pulling AT ALL. According to Mail Connection Doctor, Mail is able to connect to the internet, but neither of my accounts (my Comcast address or Gmail--yeah, I know there's a story there) are succeeding in pulling mail AT ALL. I keep getting this:

Could not connect to this [SMTP, comcast.net, or Google IMAP] server. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the Account preferences. Also verify that the server supports SSL. If it does not, deselect the "Use SSL" checkbox in the Advanced tab of Account preferences.

Because I know some will respond condescendingly that I shouldn't complain when an upgrade changes things, let me say that I've already checked these issues and the settings are all correct--that is, they were as I had them set before the upgrade. At least, all the settings I can find are the same as before. Anyone else having this issue?

I have a brand new MacBook Pro (with Maverick of course). I have tried about everything to get Mail functioning. However, it continuously asks for password but fails to connect to the email server. My email server provider tried to help me over the phone, but without success. He recommended I downloaded Thunderbird instead, which I did, with some bad taste in my mouth. With Thunderbird I can both receive and send on my private email account, which is set up as IMAP.

However, Thunderbird does not seem to be able to handle Exchange accounts, so I am still not able to connect to my work email account.

You would think that such an important program as Mail would work on a brand new Mac.

Apple, please fix this ASAP, or you will loose customers.

** As an update to my original post ** - What I had hoped was glitch that would "heal itself" with restarting the laptop must be an actual bug as I'm seeing others having the same issue. I'm still not getting any emails from any account setup as IMAP (except Gmail); the only account that does come is from Gmail. Hearing the *ding* when the Gmail emails come in usually reminds me to shut the Mail app and reopen which then usually brings in another 3 - 4 more emails it never brought in.

I've submitted a feedback request through the Mail app which never got a response, which is probably normal. I really hope they fix it, restarting the app throughout the day is less than ideal.

Have exactly the same problem - Mail stops getting new mail after some time.

I have two accounts Gmail IMAP and not gmail POP account.

After some time (usualy once or twice per day) Mail just stops delivering new mail and everything looks normal just as if nobody writes you. Until I quit and reopen Mail. Then I get several new emails! Mail doesn't get mail from both Gmail and non-Gmail accounts.

When the update was released couple of weeks ago I was relieved at first but nothing changed - I still have to reopen Mail several times a day (kinda fishing 🙂)

I have Maverick 10.9.1

I'm still seeing the issue and have to continuously restart Mail throughout the day, everyday. It only seems to be a problem with non-Gmail IMAP accounts. The bug came up after they did the Gmail IMAP update to Mail a while back.

I'm guessing we're a small minority as the issue hasn't been resolved, much less been addressed by anyone at Apple. My understanding is they don't read the posts on this forum so I've been sending feedbacks through Mail itself: Mail > Provide Mail Feedback... which does state that they will not respond directly.

The only suggestion I can make is write up a note and copy/send to their mail support team everyday until they get tired of seeing it come through and finally add it to their list of items to fix. I was sending one every other week and if I'm the only one sending it, they may chalk it up to 'user error' and disregard. The more who submit the issue, the better the chance it will get some attention.

For me - and others - the issue has been there from the beginning with Mavericks. The Gmail update did not affect this either way.

I have read that Apple finally is aware of or acknowledges this issue, but no indication of when it will be fixed:

Very disappointed in Apple for taking so long to recognize and resolve this issue. They lost a customer, someone who bought their first Mac; when you can't reliably do email, that's a major issue. They tried to get it resolved at an Apple store, and when they couldn't, returned the new Macbook Air.

Thanks for the link AZPflyer, I'm (somewhat) glad this was more of a widespread issue so it could be resolved.

Yesterday, they released 10.9.2 and one of the fixes was "Resolves an issue that prevented Mail from receiving new messages from certain providers". When I read that I quickly updated OSX, restarted and tested my IMAP account. Still not working...

It sounds like they're having issues with certain providers which may be why it's random. Has the update fixed anyone elses email?

Setting IDLE to 'on' does automatically bring in emails however I have found that it bogs down the server having so many connections constantly open and as a hosting reseller to my clients, I really don't want those phone calls.
