Maya users need to avoid upgrading to Mavericks

Users of Maya 2013 need to avoid Mavericks, as 2013 will not be supported on the new OS.
Maya 2014 users should also be aware that the Autodesk has not tested the latest version with Mavericks fully, and that there are many reported issues when it comes Maya and Mavericks.

Well, Depending on the complexity of the scene, viewport playback may not be great unless you have one of the graphics chips with dedicated memory (Nvidia GeForce). What do you mean by "slowing down" do you mean choppiness, or actual speed? How much Ram do you have?

Edit: Just to clarify, If you have the Iris pro graphics, I believe that 1024mb is shared with the system memory and not dedicated memory.

I rarely see viewport animations as smooth as a playblast, whether on my 2012 15" retina, or on my Mac Pro work station. Does it happen in every scene? If yes, then it could be a driver issue and you might have to wait for an update. Otherwise, it could just be the complexity of the scene is too much for smooth playback without dedicated graphics memory.

another thing you could do to troubleshoot would be to download the trial of a different version of maya. it won't be listed on the main autodesk site, but if you search for the latest service pack (for example maya 2013, service pack 2) you can install that and it includes the full binary for maya (just register as a trial). That way you can see if it's just that version of maya on that machine.

Well, you should have SP2, if you don't already. What I meant was that since the Iris pro units are new, there may be a compatibility issue between them and Maya. This is something that is often fixed by a driver update which, in that case, would come from Apple in the future. I'm not saying that I know there is a pending update for this issue, but that type of thing has happened in the past. Something I DO know is that Autodesk is still working on a service pack 3 for Maya 2013.

Like I said, try downloading the trial for another version, like Maya 2014, and see if the issue occurs there. That's not a fix, just a way of narrowing down where the problem is.

i've tried on two 15" in the apple store (one of that is mine now). the problem is the same. it's just dropping some frames like if there was something missing in the graphic card. but for me it's a big problem (being and animator i need to see very fluidly). but like i said, i'm talking about even just plaiyng and animation with a ball. what do you suggest? what machine do you have?

I have a 2012 and 2013 15" Macbook Pro with Retina Display with Nvidia GeForce 650M chips. Also running a 2009 Mac Pro with two Quadro 4000s. All machines are running Mavericks. If you're able to try on machines in an Apple Store, try on one with the GeForce chip. If the issue isn't there, then it is just that graphics chip. Whether or not that can be fixed with a driver update is unknown, but possible.

one thing i've noticed is that when i statr maya, also the interface is strange: the text and icons are very low definition. is that normal? anyway i've just been today at the apple store that stands 20/30 minutes from here. so i don't know when i'm gonna go. i just have 14 days, i believe, to keep or change this and i alway though this could be a monster laptop.

Yeah. Maya is not optimized for Retina Display. If you up the resolution of the display it looks better. That isn't related to the performance though. My advice would be to return it and get one with the Nvidia chip as you've confirmed that it both isn't a software issue, and isn't an issue with your specific unit by trying it on another machine in the store. However, also be aware that there ARE issues with 2013 and Mavericks, but they are related to Mental Ray rendering, not the actual user interface. So, if you are at all planning on batch rendering using Mental Ray, you will need Maya 2014, unless they release the service pack for 2013 that fixes that issue.
