After upgrading to Mavericks, my Thunderbolt display does not wake from sleep.

Upgraded to Mavericks. Using a 15" Early 2011 MBP with a Thunderbolt display attached. A Firewire drive is connected to the display. Every time the MBP is awoken from sleep, the display stays off, and a notification is displayed saying the drive was not ejected properly.

Each time, I need to unplug the thunderbolt connector and reattach it.

Has anyone else seen this behavior/have a fix?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

I won't know for a few days, but apple technical support just had me to the hibernate mode 0 (zero) as a fix for my two TBDisplay problem with waking up from sleep mode. He didn't recommend that I change the setting for use when I'm battery power. Though it sounds like the issue is different if you are on battery and still connected and using external displays. I normally would not use that mode of operation. We will see if this fixes the problem. But Apple should fix this problem instead of doing this work around plan.

This is truly strange. I have had this problem since upgrading to Mavericks. After the 2nd, 3rd and most recently the fourth update, the behavior abated for a while but then came back. I just saw that I upgraded to 10.9.4 on July 8 and I did not have a problem upon waking since then. Just now, I came back to my computer after 30 minutes and it was back to the same old behavior; two of my external USB drives came up as not having been properly ejected and my TB display would not come up until I pulled the TB plug and reinserted it

Well it appears that I spoke too soon. I've had my system fail to wake up starting both of my TBDisplays. One will start, then I have to unplug the 2nd TBD from first TBD, then plug the second unit back in. Only then do both monitors start up. A good portion of my waking from sleep mode starts both monitors, but the hibernate mode change isn't the whole answer.

Another update. This afternoon one of my TBD didn't wake up. I had to unplug and replug in the 2nd TBD. So changing the display's automatic brightness has cured my problem. So the next recommendation was to re-install OSX Mavericks. That's on the to do list. Hopefully..................

So after my Apple tech told me to re-install Mavericks, my two TBD are waking up when I click with my bluetooth magic mouse. It has been two days so far. Too short to presume the problem is fixed. To date I've done the hibernate mode change to zero, I've turned off automatic brightness control on both monitors. I've made sure that my brightness level is less than maximum. And I've re-installed Mavericks. Hopefully this last change will last longer than the previous change that lasted only two days.

My TBD is still not always waking. So the steps Apple support has asked me to do haven't worked either. The display waking up is hit and miss. Sometimes it wakes up and others not. But at least I don't have to reboot to get the second display to wake up. I just need to pull the TBD cable and plug it back in. This is a real concern. Is this a TBD problem or a computer problem or software or hardware? I mean these displays are a thousand bucks. And any USB hard drive you plug into them gets "ejected" every time the TBD doesn't wake up. I don't know what happens with a device or devices that would be plugged into the TBD port on the TBD if those devices would be ejected as well. I don't want to find out the hard way. What's next? Apple support hasn't asked me to do anything with my TBD's.

This is quite a long and old thread, however, I have recently been experiencing the problem "Apple Thunderbolt does not wake up from sleep". I have an Apple Air connected and powered by the Thunderbolt display. Now more often than not, when the Thunderbolt display goes to sleep, it will not wake up NOR power the air. The only solution I have found to work (including at the resets mentioned in this thread) is to unplug, wait 30 seconds, replug in the Thunderbolt display to AC power.

I spoke to Apple Support and they are now quite aware of the problem as a Apple Thunderbolt hardware problem. Being under warranty, I will be visiting the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store tomorrow with heavy display in hand.

If you're still under warranty, call and specifically mention that your problem is "Apple Thunderbolt does not wake up from sleep and NOT powering Macbook". They should find it in their support database and set up an appointment for you. Hope this helps!
