Mouse cursor lags with external monitor

hello,

i have just purchased a dell u2913wm monitor with a native resolution of 2560x1080. when connected to my macbook air (with mountain lion) using a mini displayport cable my cursor starts lagging on both screens. basically, when i move the mouse along a line on my desk the cursor results in a very erratic trajectory. this occurs when using a usb mouse and with the integrated trackpad. if the monitor is turned off or unplugged the mouse is smooth again. .

a similar problem was reported a few years ago but somehow the thread is just archived ( https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1965949?start=0&tstart=0 ).

also, i had trouble with the monitor that osx recognised it as ypbpr, so i had to force it to treat it as rgb device, because otherwise the image was unsharp.

on my macbook (mid 2010) running mavericks the cursor is smooth, so the monitor and the cable are apparently not faulty.

SOLUTION HERE:

Unplug screen connector (In my case mini-dp to HDMI) on the mini-dp end and plug it in again.

I personally use both bluetooth keyboard and trackpad, running OSX Sierra on a MacBook Air early 2015.

This solved the cursor lag after sleep.

Note: The cursor lag is both for the onboard AND external trackpad.

I had the same issue where after every 5 - 7 seconds the mouse cursor will freeze for a second before continuing. I am using Apple Magic mouse so no external mouse dongle. The only thing plugged into my USB port of the other side (Left side) is a 128GB flash drive. I have an Early 2015 13" Macbook Pro. The external monitor is Samsung SyncMaster S24B300 connected via HDMI.

The way I resolved this issue was to Change the refresh rate of external monitor from 60 Hertz (NTSC) which was selected as default to 50 Hertz (PAL) which it should be for EU region. The rest of the settings are Scaled to 1080p and standard Rotation with under-scan off.

Hope this helps.

Im just wondering are you guys using a thunderbolt adapter? I realized when I was using a thunderbolt to DVI adapter i would have the lag problems with the mouse and anything I did on the laptop would lag. I was using some cheap adapter I found on amazon and ended up replacing it to apples adapters and the lag went away. I have 2 external 27'' monitors connected to my mac book 2013 late model and no more lag. So im thinking if you guys are using some cheap thunderbolt to hdmi or thunderbolt to dvi adapter

I always use usb port on the opposite side of HDMI port and still have this issue from Mavericks. I have this issue with bluetooth mice, wireless mice, and also wired mice. I'm struggling with this issue since the moment I bought a monitor for my macbook. I have reported this issue several time, no response received. And also have no fix for it in these years. I'm really tired of these issues

I too have faced this issue (occasional stuttering of input devices when external monitor connected), ever since the days of Mavericks. I can't claim to have a certain fix for it, or even be sure of what's causing it, but this is my theory.

The problem is due to the electrical interface between the monitor and the HDMI port. I believe this because it doesn't happen with every monitor, and I also suspect there may be grounding issues with my monitor. Perhaps it's a fundamental chipset incompatibility, I have no idea (the console log gives no clues). The only way I have found to mitigate this, although this may be coincidental, is to make the connection more secure for the plug on the Mac side of the cable. In my case the weight of the cable is pulling down on the plug, making it angle slightly upward, and perhaps causing a less secure connection for all of the pins. I have placed a piece of cardboard under the plug, thick enough that the plug can only enter horizontally. Whilst I do occasionally do encounter lag, I can now go many days without any problems, and in my case the connection still could be more secure, as it moves too far laterally for my comfort.

I would suggest improvising a way to make the connection as secure as possible, and, if after a few days the incident rate falls, then my suggestions would be

  • As short an HDMI cable as is necessary. The longer the cable, the more chance of issues.
  • A better cable. My cable was the cheapest eBay cable I could find, and whilst it appears to work, the connection doesn't feel as secure as I imagine it should be.

I should also add that when it does start lagging, you can reset the interface by opening the Displays panel in System Preferences. If more than one refresh rate is available, toggle that. If not, rotate the screen (then immediately revert it). It may require more than one application.

Hi guys,

I'm having the same issue as most of you. Searching about it I got in this thread.

I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) with GeForce GT 750M 2048 and a Samsung LU28E590 4K monitor. I tried a lot of solutions described here. If I work with the mac screen opened the issue goes away (I would prefer to work just with the monitor). My issue is with magic mouse one. I tried with a logitech and it happens too. I have a magic trackpad and it works fine.

I was wondering if with magic mouse 2 the problem goes away.

Anyone got a definitely solution?

I've also got this same problem in my new Macbook Pro 15'' 2015 model. I'm using an LG Full HD 24'' monitor. Yesterday when I first connected the monitor it happened for a while and then it seemed to have gone away. Now it seems to be doing the same again. I think if I plug and unplug the monitor it will sometimes go away and other times it will happen. I'm not sure if there's any actual pattern to it.
