Q: Mavericks - power use / service battery

Yes, this is what happened to me as well, and I'm seeing a bunch of threads on here that indicate this seems to be have been a somewhat widespread problem with the upgrade. For some reason, my service battery warning came on, and then went away again, but my battery on 2011 Mac Book Air is only lasting 4-5 hours tops. I installed a battery health monitor that lets you see the maximum charging capacity of your battery, and mine has drastically decreased just in the last couple of days after the update. Will be taking it in to the Apple Store to see what's what.

Same here on a 13" MBP 2.8 i7 with about 145 cycles on the battery count. Just installed mavericks and noticed a quick drain and the warning message.

Hopefully Apple addresses this soon.

Same here on a 1 year old MBA.  I just got my MBA back after a month of repair for a defective flash storage drive. The warranty period just expired and now comes this issue.  I hope this can be fixed by a firmware update.

I am experiencing this issue as well. I am going to take my MBP 2011 into the apple store within the next few days and I will update this thread with what I find out. Thanks for posting to make me feel not so crazy.

after installing mavericks on my late 2009 MBP, it said service battery.  My computer died after 10 minutes unplugged on a fully charged battery.  No battery issues before install.  I went to apple and they made me buy a new battery ($129) because they said I was the only one with this problem so far. I would say hold off going to apple until they realize they have a real problem!!

I have the exact same problem. Service battery message appeared after the update. Before the update, my battery could last about 4-5 hours, now less than 2. Bought my MBA last year. I thought my battery died and was going to replace it--looks like I should wait.

they said if it becomes a common mavericks problem apple "usually" does the right thing and will refund my money.

I'm also having this problem.  Everything was fine before Mavericks on my 2011 Macbook Air, and then after the upgrade it says "Service Battery."  If anybody else is having issues, I'd suggest they post here.  I have 216 cycles on my battery, and not the 1000 listed here: http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html.  Needless to say, I'm not very happy about this!

Macbbook Pro 2010 13" here. 'Service battery' message came up after mavericks install. Also, battery won't charge to 100% now - gets stuck at 97%.

Just noticed the service battery message in my MBP (late 2008) after Mavericks install. Two years ago I had to replace my battery and my current count is 334 - not great, I know, but far from disastrous.

Turns out that pulling the plug for a few minutes and connecting it back again (my battery went from 100% to 95%) made the message disappear. The system info now is giving me the same cycle count, but the condition status is normal.

As for the original question, the 5% drop happened in 3 minutes or so (I don`t think it was like that before), but now that the status is back to normal, I wonder if the battery consumption will normalize. I will let you know if it does.

Same here. Even though the battery is rated to go out at 1000 cycles, after just 380 cycles my late 2012 MBP is showing the service battery sign

Having the same problem with my 2011 Macbook Air. Immediately after the Mavericks upgrade, the Service Battery warning appeared and the charge drops much quicker than before. My cycle count is 406. The warning disappeared briefly at one point, but it's back again.

The upgrade also borked the power/restart button. Pressing it now causes the screen to go blank for a few seconds, but the shutdown/restart dialog never appears.

Service Battery warning is back again. And the awkward power/restart button behavior you just described is happening for me as well.
