Lacie disk on FW not sleeping after installing Mavericks

On my 2007 iMac, with a LaCie D2 Quadra. This has been connected for years with FW800, and the power switch on the disk is set to Auto. When sleeping the Mac, the disk has always gone to sleep. After installing Mavericks, the disk does not go to sleep after sleeping the Mac when connected with FW800 or FW400, but will sleep if connected with USB2.0. Any ideas?

Same here. LaCie d2 connected via FW800 dosn't go to sleep with Mavericks when not involved in use.

If I unmount it just keeps spinning, until the iMac (2010) goes on standby (by itself or forced to stop).

Not the same with my Toshiba portable with USB 3 (dedicated to TimeMachine), which seems to sleep regularly.

No worse issues at the moment.

Third party info on Apple faults is an Apple feature. All my post shows is that Apple (apparently) have said that "they" know about the fault. There is no evidence at all that they do know about it at senior management level, nor that they are working on it. Perhaps that is too much to ask!

However, I guess that the inability of Firewire (and Thunderbolt) drives to sleep is such a serious fault that if Apple ignores it (as they have the 2 1/2 year-old mouse problem) some customers would be forced to remain on Mountain Lion (as I have) or turn to Windows.

The only thing that anyone can do is to send feedback to Apple:

However, don't hold your breath. Given the 2 1/2 year old problem with the Magic Mouse which Apple hasn't acklowledged let alone fixed, consider changing to USB external drives, or just grit you teeth (or buy a Windows machine!!)

Same issue here.... My wife wants the iMac out of the livingroom. Since the noise of the FW disks is now noticable present when the iMac is in sleep mode..

Hi folks!

Just read this blog secs before freaking out - helped - I am not alone... Good.. I have the exact same problem with my two LaCie 4big Quadra Media.

They are not falling into sleep mode...energy consumption and noise are at a maximum.

Just mentioned it to Apple under " LaCie disks on FW not going into sleep mode" .. the energy issue appears to be a dear USP to them, at least according to the last presentation speeches... we shall hope and see...

I suggest we bombard them with further feedback... so please do the same...

Well, recent years each September-product presentation put great emphasize on energy consumption... check out the Apple Events segement... USP is an acronym for Unique Selling Proposition... i.e. Apple made a big fuss about low energy consumption. Ergo: external drives not going into sleep mode is not advantageous keeping that promise... No, Apple has not made any statements after my last superficial checking.... for energy relations check out all last keynote.... even the last (but I am not sure when... its 83min!):

I called Apple Support and they did not state that they were aware of this issue at all.

I'm quite surprised because this is also occuring with a Thunderbolt drive I have attached (G-Drive) - so all drives apart from those attached with USB-2 or 3 will have this issue. In particular, this will really affect the Mac Pro due to be released in a few weeks.

I guess we can hope it is fixed in a point revision, but I believe there is no evidence at the present time to say that Apple is aware and working hard on this issue.
