You're not alone! I have struck the same issue since upgrading to Mavericks. The same applies to the syncing of Contacts between Outlook & (Mac) Contacts.

If like me you (weren't) using iCloud to sync your iCal & Contacts between your Mac and your iPhone I think you'd find local syncing of contact & calendar info would have stopped. The ability to select contact & calendar syncing has now gone from iTunes.

From what I can tell from 'searches' the only way you can sync your iPhone with iCal/Contacts on your Mac is now via iCloud. I've long avoided iCloud for everything except Find my Phone but now I appear to have been forced into it. I've now enabled calendars and contacts on iCloud (iPhone & Mac) and am waiting ... jury is still out.

So far email (gmail a/c's) seems OK across Outlook & Mail on my Mac & my iPhone.

This doesn' resolve the Outlook <-> Calendars/Contacts issue however.

I have bookmarked this post & will come back if I can find anything ...

You will need to move the local calendar events, contacts, tasks and notes to the Exchange folders.

Note: Your "This is Me" contact must be under "On My Computer".

All items move easily except for Calendar meetings.

You can't move a meeting between calendars in Outlook for Mac 2011

Move from Local to Exchange:

  • Uncheck the Exchange folder.
  • Check the local folder.
  • Select all.
  • Drag to Exchange.
  • Check Exchange and you should see all your data.

Calendar items are different. You need to put in List view first. See this link for help.

Thank you for your help:

1. I made sure that my "This is Me" contact is under "On My Computer.

2. When used the Sync Services to sync my Outlook 2011 Contacts and Calendars in OnMicrosoft (Exchange), it duplicated all information exactly from On My Computer. I checked the contents of OnMicrosoft and On My Computer Contacts and Calendars and they match exactly. See the following images. I am still stumped.

Success using Microsoft Exchange online to sync Outlook 2011 contacts and calendar with iPhone.

I realize that this solution does not solve the problem of exposing one's data to the cloud but is is the ONLY way I have found to easily sync Outlook with my iPhone. Syncing through iCloud is not an option for me as I have no easy way to get my data from Outlook to Apple Contacts and Calendar given the absence of sync services in OSX Mavericks.

After spending about an hour on the telephone with Microsoft tech support yesterday, I succeeded in syncing Outlook 2011 contacts and calendar with my iPhone.

1. I signed up for a Microsoft Exchange (OnMicrosoft) account for $4/month.

2. I enabled that Onmicrosoft exchange account in Microsoft Outlook 2011 and on my iPhone.

3. After I set up the Onmicrosoft exchange account, the following folders appeared at the left bottom of my screen : Inbox, Drafts, Sent Items, Deleted Items and Junk Email under an OnMicrosoft heading.

4. I tested the syncing of email by sending a test email from Office 365 online to my regular email address. It showed up in my email AND in the sent folder under the OnMicrosoft heading in Outlook 2011 on my Mac.

5. Under Calender, Contacts, Tasks and Notes in Outlook 2011, there appeared the OnMicrosoft heading in addition to the On My Computer heading. The Calender, Contacts, Tasks and Notes folders under the On My Computer Heading were duplicated under the OnMicrosoft heading. These headings also showed up on my iPhone. Nevertheless, these new folders were blank, i.e. they contained no information.

6. Finally, and this is the key step, I copied the information from my On My Computer address book and Calendar to the OnMicrosoft folders on Outlook 2011. Then I unchecked the On My Computer folders, preventing myself from seeing duplicate contacts and calendar events in Outlook 2011. I did not erase the information in the On My Computer folders, as I wanted to retain duplicate information in case there was a problem with Microsoft Exchange. One small point is that Contact Groups cannot be copied to the OnMicrosoft folders.

7. Shortly thereafter my contacts and calendars on Outlook 2011 started showing up on my iPhone. As I did with Outlook 2011, I checked only the OnMicrosoft exchange folders on my iPhone so that I would not see duplicate contacts and events. By the way, I have almost 10,000 contacts, so the initial sync took an hour or so. I did not eliminate the existing events and contact on my iPhone in the case that some problem developed with the Microsoft Exchange syncing.

8. I hope that this explanation helps those who care about getting sync between Outlook 2011 and the iPhone to work.

This whole situation is a fiasco; I cannot believe that there is now no way to sync my Outlook calendar with my calendar on the Mac (which propogated items to my iPhone, iPad, etc.) without having to phsyically drag and drop calendar items from one to another. What a royal pain in the ***.

You buy expensive equipment and software and then the manufactures just "upgrade" stuff and leave you out in the cold. Outrageous!

Gentlemen (and ladies), I would like to report back that syncing Outlook 2011 with my iPhone using Microsoft Exchange so far has worked perfectly. As I mentioned before, I have almost 10,000 contacts, many with extensive text in the notes section, and there have been no problems. Syncing occurs very quickly once I make a change on my computer. By the way, this is the only mechanism that I have found so far to easily sync Outlook and the iPhone. As I mentioned previously, given the removal by Apple of Sync Services from Maverick, there is no easy way to get data from Outlook to Apple Contact and Calendar, thus making iCloud syncing unusable even if you do not object to it.

I understand that the Microsoft Exchange solution is still cloud based and also costs $4/month, but at least it works for Outlook. For what is is worth, my feeling is that, if the government is interested in you, it will find a way to get your data. My main security concern is not the government but rather identity thieves. Microsoft Exchange security appears to be fairly robust, as it is used by large corporate customers who are far more interesting targets than am I. As Scott McNealy said in 1999, "You have zero privacy anyway. Get over it." I hate this sentiment with all my heart, but it is what it is.

I wish you all the best. Now that I have solved my own problem to my satisfaction, I am signing off. I will check back periodically to see if anyone has found an easy to use and secure solution for syncing locally. Please be a bit nicer to each other. I sincerely thank dianeoforegon for helping me solve this problem.

Hi Robert - followed your steps and it's working - i did some demo contacts and calendar notes and they've synced... relieved about that until MS/Apple do something stupid again to wreck this.

On that note, how did you copy your entire calendar - I can only select one thing at a time.

I have a related question - since this is now on the iPhone, why is the iPhone not sycning this via the cloud to my other devices: iPad and desktop?

I have just posted this on the Microsoft feedback page:

"Hi there, I have recently upgraded to mavericks and have been experiencing debilitating issues with outlook. In short, it appears that the synching of calendar and contact information is horribly broken.

I know that Mac users are probably a lower priority but please for the sake of all that is holy, help us!"

Would be good for someone to tweet this also..

The total indifference of huge private corporations in pursuit of their interests over those of the public is precisely why we should put the government in charge of our health care. Unfortunately that's not going to make Outlook 2011 and Mac Calendar sync, either. I'm not even using Mavericks yet and the functionality seems to have vanished. Lame.
