Enable Bootcamp to install from usb for OSX 10.9**WORKS**

Please verify the integrity of the your source ISO and/or DVD. Has the the screen changed in the last two hours?

I'm running Yosemite 10.10.4 on a MBP late 2011 with another HDD instead of the optical drive, I did everything as I was suppose to and bootcamp now shows me the option to use the USB. I'm trying to install Win 10 but everytime I try to create the bootable USB I get the following error: "Your bootable USB drive could not be created" "An error occurred while copying the Windows installation files." Did anyone encountered this? is this a problem with 10?

I'm pretty sure you can't use a usb. It has to go through CD which is a pain I know I had to do it. But I have early 2011 and apple has only officially released the drivers for 2012 and later.

Even the changing the plist thing didnt work to install on USB.

Now what you can do or what I did is run your OSX hard drive off of USB and you should be able to install Windows, but it has to have that superdrive in there.

My initial plan (which is slowly going to s*#t for no other reason than Apple being an a#s) was to install windows on my second hard drive (the one in the optic bay) and keep it completely separate from the main OSX disk.

Correct me if I'm wrong but what you are suggesting is:

1) remove the main SSD1 and connect it via usb

2) put the second SSD2 (the optic bay one) in the proper HDD bay

3) put back the superdrive

4) install windows on SSD2

5) put back SSD2 in the optic bay and put SSD1 in the HDD bay

Is that correct? Would something like this work?

I'm getting really frustrated with Apple lately, there is absolutely no reasons why my MBP won't be able to run Win 10 (the hardware specs are way higher than any low to medium level Windows laptop and probably as good as the top ones). I also don't see any reason not to update BootCamp to support USB on older models with optic drive other than laziness (they should know by now that their laptops have an extremely high life expectancy and that a fully upgraded 4 years old MBP can take on any new laptop without any issues).

I cannot confirm windows 10 working because my product key hasn't come through yet, which is a whole other issue because of windows 8.1 industry pro. But yes I had so much trouble trying to go through the USB with 8.1. I gave up and did it the way you listed and worked like a charm. When I get 10, which I think I will be getting in the next few days, I'll make sure it works.

Apple is a pain and I can see why they do some of these things but you are right it is very ridiculous that I spent $2300+ on my computer and specs are still good and the computer is running like a champ yet do not want to update certain things to make it work.

Awesome, how do you attach your main HDD via USB?you just remove it and put it in a hard disk enclosure and connect it to the laptop? does it need to be formatted? how do you make your laptop to boot?

It worked perfectly. I followed every step mentioned including running the command to change the signature. I am using MBP late 2011 with latest OS X Yosemite 10.10.5. I tried without changing the signature but bootcamp got crashed. I guess signature changing is mandatory for OS releases from 10.9 and above.

I Used this sata to usb and i still had to have an OS X partion on the windows drive

i might can Change after everything is said and done, but my current setup is a little ridiculous. I've got an OS X main disc then on my second drive I have a 13gb OS X partition ( with nothing in it) and the rest is windows.

I Had to go from 7 to 10 and once I get my 10 key I'll try a fresh install, but 10 seems to be running okay.

Ok so I was finally able create a disk image on a USB (win7, win10 does not work on MBPlate 2011). At the end of the process, after my MBP reboots I get this message:
