iMovie 10.0 Video rendering error: -50?

No matter what I option I choose, I can't share my movie in iMovie 10.0. It always fails with a Video rendering error: -50. What am I doing wrong?

Searched for ages to find a solution to this problem. Glad to have finally found this thread, as it seems the most intelligent one out there.

I'm using iMovie 10.0.2. I was doing some editing and sharing videos to Vimeo. I'd done two already before the next one I tried came back with the 'Failed to share' message -50.

I tried the tip of deleting the Render files but that didn't work. It became obvious that there was one clip that had been corrupted, so you'll just have to find that clip and remove it. I'm guessing the original import didn't quite finish, but can't be sure - the clip is still there in my Projects and plays ok, so can't explain that.

Anyway, I spliut the clip into parts by copying it into new Movies, and shared each one to try and isolate the section that wasn't rendering. I found it, removed the clip and was able to share to Vimeo again. It would have been better if I had access to the original recording to import it again, but nevermind - at least I managed to share it!

I had the same problem on a quite long project 4 hours with 340 clips. Here my solution :

- in the finder right clic on « iMovie library » then « Show Package Contents », open the event file concerned then « Original Media » check if it matches exactly your event inside the iMovie app (number of clips, sound, songs...).

- Go back to your event file in the finder then trash all the files in « Render Files ».

Close and open iMovie app and try export again.

hope this helps.

A Solution which worked for me !!!

Sorry this is a long post.

Hi everyone,

This is my first post on this board, and thanks to everyone for their continued efforts/ideas to try and work around some really poor coding by Apple.

The fact that this version (v10) of iMovie has so many issues really shows Apply have taken their eye of the ball - particularly since some of us have paid for this.

Anyway, my project is just over 2 hours and comes from content from my Samsung Galaxy 4 and GoProHero3+ which spans about 40 hours of recording. All the content is 1080.

In my opinion any editing suite worth anything should easily be able to work with multiple origins of content and size of image - so long as it's in a standard format.

However, I do accept that if the frame rate is different, then that could cause a hic-up, so please check that on your source capture.

The idea was to make a DVD, of course I don't have iDVD either since I had to rebuild my system and Apple no longer offer that as a product (nice joined up thinking - the Optical Disk is actually still needed despite Apple's thought process).

So I am intending to O/P to a file in 1080 HD and suck that into a DVD creating program.

Anyway, the problem is to find the scene which is causing the rendering process to stumble.

The Rule of Halves is a sound idea, but extremely time consuming for anything other than the simplest of projects.

What I found was - (and this may not work for you), is that iMovie 2013 (V10.) created the file for output and helpfully closed it at that point. It was still called the file name I had chosen and in the folder I designated.

Double clicking on the file resulted in Quicktime playing it, and I could see on the time line how far it had reached.

Back to iMovie and I went to that scene and I speculatively wondered if it was just the start of that scene, so I trimmed it by about a second.

It worked and about 7 hours later it was all done !

I am still running through the finished file, but it seems ok.

I hope this can help some of you.

All the best

This is what helped me to fix a error -50 in iMovie:

There is a "corrupted" file. You need to find it and delete it. The way to do this is to save the movie as a file to your desktop. Once it crashes, go and play the file. You'll see exactly where it ends. Then go back into your editor and cut or edit the movie clip right around that area. I just cut out the first portion of one clip, and there was no need to cut the whole clip out. Worked like a charm.

Thank you everyone for chiming in -- I think Apple has heard us.

After installing the new iMovie update (10.0.3) I have been able to export my film without trouble. No modification to the original clip was needed. This was not the case with the previous two updates, so if you haven't downloaded 10.0.3, I suggest giving it a shot.

Good luck!

I had the same problem. Tried copy and pasting the files into a new project, but that didn't work. Then I figured out some of the files I'd imported — which were from a different source than the rest of the files — were the problem. I deleted those *alien* files and reimported them to iMovie and reinserted them into the project (luckily, it was only two clips). That solved the problem.

So likely, it's a corrupted file that's causing the problem. Think about any inconsistencies in your files before you go through all the steps to delete iMovie, create new users, etc., as is recommended in some of the other replies to this post.
