Since installing 10.9 my CF Cards will not copy photos and I get Error 36

Ever Since installing OS X Mavericks on my 11 in Macbook Air I am unable to copy photos from my CF cards. As soon as the file transfer begins the finder shows error 36 and the card unmounts without copying any files. I have tried repairing permissions and all the usual fixes. Any suggestions?

I have the same issue with my Kingston USB 3.0 CF reader.
At first I thought, it could be something with my new Macbook (got the latest less than a week ago), but I can use the card reader from the Bootcamp.

Hope there will be an update asap.

Did anyone contact Apple support? I did it right now. I have got the information, that I have only the option to summit a bug to Apple.

Yes it is true for nearly all card readers, that you have to update these with Windows.
I have done this within the Bootcamp, you can download a Windows trail version to do this.

It could be this link here for the firmware:

I'm afraid, that the Genius bar can't help you in that case....

A work around until this is fixed is to use Disk Utility app. Selelect your CF by name in the disk utility menu. It will appear listed there. Right click on the name and select Reveal in finder and it will then show up in the finder, but still not on the desktop. Click on the CF card's name in the finder to show the folders. Select the folder with your images. You can then copy copy it to the desktop. Hope this helps you.

It's a Mavericks problem.

Here's my situation:

I've got three different 32GB Compact Flash cards, and two different readers. All 3 cards work fine in my Canon 5D Mk. III. All 3 cards work fine on my Windows 7 machine with either reader. All 3 cards and both readers worked fine on Lion. Also, all my SD cards work fine on Mavericks and Windows, no problems there.

Here's where it fails: If I use Mavericks Finder to try to copy any of the cards using my USB 3.0 Kingston reader, it always fails with the same message: "The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in "" can't be read or written. (Error code -36)" I looked up error code -36, and it just means "I/O error" -- not very helpful.

If I use Mavericks Finder to copy the card with my junky old $2 USB 2.0 reader, it works!

So here's my summary: In Mavericks, Apple introduced a problem: You can't read a Compact Flash card with a USB 3.0 reader.

More:

My problem is with the Kingston FCR-HS3 reader. Kingston acknowledges the problem with this reader under Mavericks, but the only fix they have is for Windows machines ⚠.

Here's the link to the pertinent FAQ, with the link to the Windows fix:http://www.kingston.com/us/support/technical/products?model=FCR-HS3

It says for Mac OS, contact technical support. I guess that's my next step.

I have the exact same problem and I totally feel the pain and frustration!

I went to the genius bar yesterday with regards to this problem and heres what we established.

USB 3.0 Sandisk Card reader with 16gb Extreme Compact Flash works on every single Mac computers except those with USB3.0 capabilities.

Tried with MacBook Pro 2010 with mavericks and it works

Tried with MacBook Pro 2010 with 10.75, 10.8 and it works

Tried with MacBook Pro Retina Display with Mavericks and it fails

Tried with MacBook Air 2013 with Mavericks and fails

The above was tried at home with a Sandisk and a Lexar USB 3.0 on MacBook Pro 2009 with Mavericks and it works fine

But when its on my 2013 Retina MacBook Pro, I face the same problem as you guys.

My grevience is why can't Apple admit that the made a boo boo? Their geniuses aint much of geniuses if they kept asking us to use our own money to buy different card readers and cards to try and trouble shoot for them! Their solution is for me to get a FireWire version or wait inevitably for a patch from Apple.

I am a photographer and the reason why I upgraded to the new RMBP was because of the USB 3.0 function and now it has failed miserably without any solutions unless I spend more money to buy a new firewire card reader (which oh wait... I would need to buy an adaptor from thunderbolt to firewire too because the sleekness of the new RMBP would be compromised and Apple wants to earn more money!) or... If i cant afford those changes, I can choose to wait... and... wait...

You don't need Firewire and the adapter.

I've been down the same paths and am close (I believe) to resolution. Here's a summary:

It only affects Compact Flash cards.

It only occurs when you connect a USB 3.0 CF reader to a new MacBook running Mavericks. Lion was fine, Windows works fine, SD cards work fine, and a USB 2.0 reader works fine (though slower, of course).

I'm using a Kingston FCR-HS3 reader instead of the Sandisk. When I looked through Kingston's tech support info, they acknowleded the problem, and even though their devices worked OK until Mavericks, they've agreed to make it right. My unit is covered by a 2-year warranty, was bought in Sept. '12, and they have said they'll replace it with one that will work with Mavericks. I don't actually have it yet, but I'm optimistic I'll get it and it will work.

So: You can either contact Sandisk and see if they'll replace yours or maybe do a firmware update, or buy a new Kingston USB 3.0 reader that presumably will work.

I hope that helps, good luck!

This incompatibility showed up in Mavericks with USB 3.0 CF readers. I had a Kingston FCR-HS3 reader that worked before Mavericks and then failed, as above.

I notified Kingston customer support, and to my surprise, they accepted responsibilty for the problem and swapped me out for a replacement reader at no charge. GREAT customer service! The replacement unit works fine.
