Q: Apogee Duet (1) not working on Mavericks

I had been on Snow Leopard and Duet worked fine. Upgraded to Mavericks, now it does not.

I plug it in initially (after reboot) and sound comes through the Duet. If I touch any volume control, the sound cuts out. In Maestro, the controls are all very finnecky, can't select any options. If I unplug and replug, still no sound comes through. Assuming it's a problem with Maestro compatability, but I've heard that Mavericks isn't really playing nicely with other non-apple hardware either. Suggestions?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

    Syrcle,

10.9.3 was the realease that fixed may of the Core Audio issues. Simply update your Mac, but if you have further questions call up Apogee tech support, they're super helpful in getting you up and running.

!0.9.3 made no difference  on my my machine, absolutely nada.  And Apogee tech support tried hard but the only thing they could come up with was that I should increase my bit rate settings.

Yeah...I'm avoiding updating to 10.9.3 because a whole slew of video and GPU related issues with programs I use such as Adobe Premiere Pro and Davinci Resolve, both lost capabilities to GPU accelloration after the update, so I'd be trading one issue for another.

Apple is really bumming me out....

Are these issues specific to the Apogee interfaces, or to all USB based audio interfaces?

With the 10.9.3 update often times it's best to erase and install for a clean update. 10.9.3 has some massive upgrades to Core Audio, the foundation of audio input and output in OS X including of course USB. Every audio interface that works alongside Core Audio saw improvements with the update.

When you say erase and install, do you mean applying a Combo update, or literally running the restore and then updating to 10.9.3 from there?

So I should spend literally hours, in my case it's close to a day to do an erase and install, just in case the update might work?  That strikes me as pretty optomistic.  And I would certainly dispute your claim that every audio interface saw improvement.   Mine certainly didn't and I've heard the same from others.  My system has not worked properly since Mountain Lion.   I certainly feel for the folks who use this equipment to make their livings.   Endless trouble shooting is not time well spent.

It doesn't work.  I tried everything before I came to the decision that Apogee is a waste of time and money. Apple and Apogee are both lost on this issue and as it's been a long running problem it's clear they can't sort it out.

Apogee. I have had no issues with Focusrite, Mackie or Motu interfaces.

What's strange, is that my duet is working perfectly with my 2013 MBP 13" Retina. I have a few other musician friends with various Macs and versions of duet and everyone seems to be rockin'.

The chip sets don't match in the units, but glad it's working for you guys.

    I got rid of mine.

I just connected my old MOTU Audio Express that was sitting in my closet, and can confirm, that when I use that, all the issues went away.  Besides the fact that the outputs on the MOTU are a little noisy for my taste which is why I got the Duet in the first place, I have very stable operations in all the programs I work in.  This is very frusterating, considering I dropped money to get improved sound.

The apogee must go at this point.

Any suggestions on suitable clean sounding replacement, because this MOTU box is only temporary till I find something better....

Apogee duet firewire *****. cracks and pops all the time. took away the midi functionality with mavericks update too. only any good on my old G5 which i have kept at the studio for recording excessively loud guitar.

maybe will  buy something that works this time - apogee never again.

    Hey guys,

My Duet Firewire worked great for years. Once I upgraded to Mavericks, had some trouble getting it up and running. Contacted Apogee support and they were great! When you call, they actually pick up the phone! Hardly any companies do that anymore. Anyways, the guys walked me through manually uninstalling and reinstalling the software. Works like a charm now! By far the best sounding cards. Have you guys tried running your Duet's through different computers?
