Mavericks issue with airplay mirroring to apple tv

I have found after upgrading to mavericks that airplay mirroring to Apple TV 3rd Gen keeps losing the connection. It will mirror my mac for a few seconds then stall and then disconnect. Anyone having a similar problem? I've upgraded firmware on apple tv but to no avail

I FIXED IT! See answer below.

PROBLEM: Airplay worked for a little while, and as others in this forum it then NEVER worked again. I couldn't see the Airplay icon, meaning my devices (laptop, iPhone and iPad) thought there was no Apple TV on the network.

WHAT I DID: I tried all the options in the previous posts, and none of them worked.

WHAT FINALLY FIXED IT:

I went to my router's admin page, and I changed the security settings from "WPA & WPA2" to "WPA" only.

Problem solved! Not only did my Airplay start working right away, but also other issues I was experiencing with Airprint were solved as well. So anything that relies on Bonjour services for syncing was fixed thanks to this small change in my router's settings.

I hope this helps others as well.

MY SET UP:

- MacBook Pro (15in retina 2013 - the new one)

- Mac OSX Mavericks (latest version fully up to date)

- Apple TV latest generation, fully up to date

- iPhone 5s

- iPad Air

- Internet connection: BT Total Broadband

- Home network router: BT HomeHub 3 (latest firmware fully up to date)

Thank you, thank you, thank you! This was the solution for me.

I was going CRAZY having just switched from a PC to a Mac and wondering if I had made a mistake. To top it all off, my kid's 1st birthday is Saturday and I wanted to show a movie of her first year on our TV while people mulled about. Lots of stress.

I am not a fan of decreasing my network's security (WPA 2 is stronger), but I'll switch it back after the party and hope Apple updates the firmware to support WPA 2.

For me, I had what could have been a timezone/clock mismatch from my machines (set to Chicago time) and the AppleTV (set to Cupertino - default).

As soon as I updated the timezone on the appletv, everything started working the way I would've expected.

The reason I looked at that is because the VPN at my office requires system clocks to be within 60 seconds or so in order to connect...otherwise I'd probably still be fiddling with it.

The solution suggested by Mario in the second post solved my problem. I was having exactly the same problem reported by the original user. The mirroring was working before upgrading to Mavericks and I think that stopped working after upgrading. But I also started using the Wifi in my Apple TV while still using the Ethernet in my iMac. I switched the iMac to Wifi and everything works now as expected.

Apple, is it so complicated to make two devices in the same network work flawlessly?

At first I solved the problem by changing my wifi security settings --- by changing I mean weakening them from WPA2 to WPA. See Dec 20, 2013 12:19 AM(in response to london_mbp)

But the next day I had problems again.

Finally, I fixed it (for me) by directly connecting the apple tv (3rd gen) with an ethernet cord (it was going into my TV). Now my MacBook Pro (2013) shows that it can mirror excatly like it is supposed to.

Why, I have no idea but this worked for me. If you can plug the apple tv directly into your network with an ethernet cord, go for it.

I have always had mine set up directly connected and it still doesnt work. Returned my 2 year ofl Apple TV today for a new one and same problem exsisting with this unit too. Talked to them on the phone and they cannot help me either. Apple TV is a bad piece of hardware, I would understand "Maybe" if the device was made an entirely different company and my Macbook another but its not

This is how I fixed it as well. Thanks for the tip as I didn't want to mess with my router's settings and reduce security.

I'm not pleased with Apple on this one and can't beleive they haven't at least posted a notification about it (perhaps they have and if so maybe someone can reproduce it on this board as this is the only resource I found helpful).

This is the second time an Apple update has hosed me in this fashion, and I have to say I'm pretty miffed by it.

Maybe I'm naive on this count, but I didn't expect an OS update to mess up one of the reasons I switched my entire ecosystem to iOS and Apple OS i.e. matching all my media across devices and playing across all devices.

This change broke that.

Anyway, thanks to this board for the debugging.

So I have a mid 2013 MacBook Air and when I upgraded to Mavericks the airplay mirroring stopped working. I tried many fixes from the forum and none helped. I called phone support and they said to restart and hold down Command + R and select reinstall Mavericks, which installs the OS all over again, but, doesnt lose any settings or files. I tried this and reset all of my hardware and readded all of my accounts to my Airport Extreme and my 3rd iteration Apple TV. None of this helped.

I then downloaded an installation of Mavericks 9.2 and found a program to make an install disk on a thumb drive. I backed up all of my files in my docs and my music to a removable disk and made sure that I had most of my small stuff in the iCloud. I erased my MacBook HDD and installed a fresh (full) install and not an upgrade (from Mountain Lion). This worked like a champ.

I will note that Im a Network Admin and have tried three different firewalls in Mavericks and this probably screwed up my communication with my Apple TV. I could still, however, use iTunes and my movies and music on the TV, but could not mirror from my desktop. After the fresh install, I notice that my Air is speedy quick and seems to run better than it EVER ran, even after I installed all of my fancy security stuff as well. As with MOST operating systems, a clean install is ALWAYS better than an upgrade, DUH. The p[roblem COULD have been the upgrade, OR the settings left over by all of the uninstalled software I had tried out. I will never know for sure, But, I will go back to my previous statement about the effectiveness of a fresh installation.

SO, i downloaded a full install of Mavericks 9.2 and used diskmaker X and sestarted holding down the option key and deleted my previous install and then selected the USB drive (8GB) with the autoinstall I made. Worked like a charm and reloaded all of my stuff back. Would like to also point out that my Chromecast device also started working again from the computer as well. I hope some part of this brain dump helps you folks, as it was a real drain on my time doing so much troubleshooting for naught.

This is what I just posted for someone else as I fixed the issue without Affecting my security, but at a price:
