I have found a fix for this. Basically, you go into your library and delete the network preferences. When you reboot the machine, the OS will recreate the files from scratch. I've had no issues since.

yeah, i tried the above solution...it's a no go for me, after i rebooted my machine, it was connected to my home wifi, but after letting it sit for an hour, i came back...same thing, the icon at the top right shows it's connected, however if i click on safari and try to go to a website, it just hangs, and never goes anywhere...i have to right click on the icon at the top right to turn off the wifi, and then turn it on...and refresh the page and it works.../sigh...

I have the same problem with my second new Macbook Air on Mavericks. I spent a great deal of time on the phone with Apple support. They always moved me on to a 'senior technician.' Then they replaced my first Macbook Air. Its now having the same problem.

Yesterday I called a local unaffiliated Apple consultant. He says/thinks that Apple knows about the problem of staying hooked to wifi networks and that it is likely to be fixed in the first update to Mavericks, whenever that's going to be.

Meanwhile I plan to suck it up and deal with the annoyance of having to reconnect to my network multiple times per day.

O.K. One day later and one experience wiser...

I tried several things that have been suggested here and in other threads.

Deleting the two .plist files didn't work (although I thought it was a great suggestion).

As soon as I rebooted, the two files were recreated, and the same connection problem persisted.

What WORKED eventually:

Go into network settings -> more options and delete the troubling network out of your preferred networks list.

Then add that network back, and voilá!

I am somewhat uncertain, whether I might have to do that now with every network that I used connect to, i.e. at my family, friends, airports, cafés, etc.

Anyhow, it is very cumbersome and not very user friendly, namely having to forget/delete and recreate all network settings after an OS update... grrrrrrrr!

Hi.

It seems almost as though it is not one thing failing but rather a whole set of different things causing conflicts with each other. I'm afraid it looks like you have to do just about a complete reset in each individual component.

Still get dropped occasionally, but the speed is much, much better. Here is what I did...

Reset the PRAM and SMC.

I found that I had to factory reset my router, and set it up again.

In the Network preferences I..

  1. + added a new wifi connection(do this first) and deleted the old one
  2. Got rid of all of the other connections except Ethernet (Take a screen shot of any VPN's or connections you use often so you can set them up again)
  3. Went into Advanced and deleted the saved Wifi networks, including the one I am on and re -added them.

You may need to Turn your wifi on and off a few times and if you have problems go to Network Preferences > Advanced > TCP/IP > and hit the "Renew DHCP Lease.

Also turned off most of the Notifications and Reset my Calendar feeds to update every hour. (This seem to have given my web browser first preference to data again.)

Clear my cache in all browsers

And

Backup these 2 files:

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist

Then delete these 2 files and reboot.

This seems to do it

I have the same problem, not sure if it was the WiFi though since my iMac is directly connected via cable to the Comcast router. I had to enable WiFi to get the maps to locate me, which is dumb. Now it's probably trying to use the 54 Mb WiFi instead of the 1GB ethernet, which is stupid. It shouldn't do this. My internet connection is 105 Mbps, I don't want to use the WiFi.

It makes NO rational sense at all that WiFi has to be enabled for location services to work on the Apple Maps app. What's the f'ing difference between using WiFi and the **** ethernet cable to get my location? It's connecting to the same **** router.

This is definitely an issue with the new Mavericks OS. I have the same problem as other mentioned here. Anytime I close the cover of my macbook air it forgets the wifi connection, and to make matter worse cant find it again unless I open Network Preferences or Join Other Network and force it to go look for networks again. The problem was noticed for the first time immediately after I upgraded.

This is not a problem with my device, all other devices not on Mavericks still work fine. And it's not a problem with my router or WiFi because it happens for any WiFi signal anywhere that I am connected to and all other devices work fine. I may continue to to try to remove some of my regular networks and re-add them, but so far this hasn't worked.

One of the posts here suggests to delete your preferences file which essentially will remove all of your previosuly saved networks, that seems like overkill, but is a good way to clean up all of those old networks you never use. But be sure you know the passwords to those networks if you plan to re-add them later.

The most likely fix is a Mavericks patch - so I do hope Apple is listening. After all the reason I upgraded was I thought Mavericks would make my macbook easier to use, not harder to use.

I was having this issue also and after hours of reading forums seem to have found the solution.

After a period of using the internet I would find that my connection would either drop and I would get the error

ALERT: No Internet Connection

or

the internet would simily hang and not load the page, the only way around this was to disconnect from wifi and reconnect.

I found that this was being caused by the Energy Saver. My settings had been for computer and display to sleep after 15 mins. I changed this to Never and 3 hrs respectively and so far the issue seems to be resolved.

I have no idea why the Energy Saver would cause the internet to drop but this seems to have fixed the issue for me anyway. Hope that this helps.
