You're right, the real reason that this thread is still alive is that there IS a problem.

You're also right that it's not the hardware; it's an Intel machine. Windows is turning out to be FAR more reliable than OSX lately. I've run into a LOT of people having problems with their macs, several of them deciding to sell off their macbook pro retinas because of it.

I have posted this on the earlier page and I WILL POST AGAIN 🙂

For those people having a problem with new Macbook Pro 13" Retina 2013 Haswell, with Mavericks preinstalled (like myself) - decided to reinstall OS X Mavericks - it seems that the crashing is gone when using Chrome - It has been 2 days, no crash whatsoever 🙂 (after EFI Updated as well)

I guess there were problem with the pre-installed Mavericks on Macbook Pro 13" Retina 2013 Haswell

So i suggest you guys try to reinstall it. No harm trying anyway, here's how

Use the built-in recovery disk to reinstall OS X while keeping your files and user settings intact. Important: You must be connected to the Internet to reinstall OS X.

1. Choose Apple menu > Restart. Once your Mac restarts (and the gray screen appears), hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys.

2. If you’re not connected to the Internet, choose a network from the Wi-Fi menu (in the top-right corner of the screen).

3. Select Reinstall OS X, then click Continue.

4. Follow the onscreen instructions. In the pane where you select a disk, select your current OS X disk (in most cases, it’s the only one available).

This is also happening to my new rMBP. Just started today during a music production. Very embarrassing due to my previous MBP having reliability issues as well. Just Noticed the EFI update, and will be installing shortly.

My question is.. I've noticed some of you still experiencing this issue after the EFI firmware update? Hearing that is troubling to say the least..I ran into another issue before researching this one located here https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5500276?start=135&tstart=0

Luckily this issue is chronic, and frequent so hopefully once the "fix" is installed we should have conformation sooner rather than later that its a working fix 🙂

Hi guys,
as promised weeks ago, finally here comes my update.

I got my replacement device (13" haswell rMBP / 16 GB RAM / 512 SSD) on November 19th. Unfortunately due to a lot of work i was not able to really test it out for almost a week.
But by now - December 6th - I have tested it quite a lot and here are the results:

1) Ghosting / Image retention: none! Since I now have the possibility to compare, I can tell for sure that my first device did have IR-problems. I could not reproduce any of the ghosting images which I had on the first device. Super!

2) Keyboard/Touchpad: When I received my new rMBP, it did not have the EFI-Update installed. I was happy about that, because I wanted to know ...

And after using the rMBP for a few hours, I had a typical freeze. Closing the lid for 3 seconds helped.

Now, this was actually good news for me in a way. Because it did show that it was not simply a bad batch of some devices. Remeber, my exchange device was produced weeks after the first device and it was produced after the issue was well known to Apple and the EFI update already out. Bad hardware (either by design or by bad assembly) would have been fixed by then.

Of course, after the freeze, I installed the EFI update. Since then, no problems. No freezes.

I now use this device on a daily basis for about 10 hours a day. I have to admit that I have USB-devices (mouse) plugged in quite a lot, but still I should have used the rMBP without USB-devices for at least 30 hours by now. Without any freezes or lockups.

So I am really happy by now with my 13" rMBP. Display is perfect, no problems with keyboard/touchpad and also none with WLAN (which my first device had) and a normal, apple-like keyboard with no cheap-sounds or anything alike. And the battery lasts 9-10 hours when using the rMBP "in a normal way", meaning without using Flash-plugins on websites. (They need a lot of CPU power and therefor a lot of energy)

By now, from my peronal point of view, the 13" rMBP is safe to buy and a really great laptop. Every day I use it, I like it a little more.

I did read about some people still having problems after the EFI update. But I haven't read whether it's still a simple freeze of keyboard/touchpad (and otherwise the system is up and running) or whether these are "full crashes" meaning everything stalls. The last would more point into a direction that they are simply having a crash of the OS, which can have a lot of different reasons.

Of course, since I believe the EFI updates might raise some internal tolerance values, there might simply be some devices that even go above these tolerance borders. But from what I read, these are rather few devices. Of course, I would recommend anyone who did install the EFI update and still experience problems to return it right away. Because obviously there are a lot of devices available, which do not have the problem anymore after the EFI update - so it's always better to have one of these.

And if 14 days are over already, I wouldn't care about it. Spending a lot of money and the device doesn't work like expected even after the EFI update would make me say to Apple: either you exchange this now or you definetly lost a customer for good.

Hey Oli,

I got mine about the same time as you got your second-attempt. I did the firmware update on first boot-up. I used mine for 12 days solid without an issue, but then on the 13th day I experienced 2 of the keyboard and trackpad lock-ups pretty much within minutes of each other (closing the lid for a minute works as a temporary solution), I've not had any freeze ups for the last few days though. Point being that the issue can spring up later rather than sooner, a weeks use really isn't enough time for a test on it in my opinion (probably a month of solid use is a good period to say it's gone or not).

Also I'm experiencing the machine not being able to wake-up from sleep after it has been asleep overnight i.e. a long period of time. On short sleeps it wakes up every time.

So not too impressed with the firmware update as of right now, but I can't send mine back at this point as I don't have time to be without my laptop and will be traveling for a few months very soon so I'll have to ride it out and hope that these kinks get ironed out in a future update.

I have a late 15" MacBook Pro and found the cause of one of my tracpad problems. When viewing a PDF file in Safari, scrolling became erratic and difficult to control. I thought it was a trackpad problem, but when I view the same PDF documents in Chrome, scrolling works just as it should. I suspect Safari is not completely compatible with Mavericks 10.9. I was wondering if anyone else has had the same experience. I still have other trackpad problems, particularly in Bootcamp and Apple is replacing my MacBook for the second time. I hope that solves my problems!

Hi Rabend, do both your keyboard and trackpad lock-up simultaneously? If not then it's a slightly different issue, albeit very similar in one respect.

Quite strange. You are sure the keyboard/touchpad froze and otherwise the system was running?

I did start to use my rMBP on November 19th, don't get me wrong. But due to little time I had, it was often sitting next to me for hours doing nothing but either showing the screensaver or falling into sleep mode, from which I woke it up whenever I noticed.

I sure will let you know, if mine will experience problems in the future.

Due to the number of people reporting problems after the EFI update compared to the number reporting the initial problem, I still have the feeling that the EFI update fixed the problem for some 80 or 90 % of the people. We had many new people reporting this every day. Compared to this, it has gotten a whole lot more quiet here.

Time will tell.
