No sound out after wake up in Mavericks

I have updated to Mavericks three days ago.

But I find that there is no sound output (headphone &speaker) after sleep, even though for 1 second's sleep.

Everytime I need to restart the computer to obtain the sound again.

Someone list the following suggested solution, but it actually does not work:

"

Close all windows and quit all applications.

Click "Go" menu in the Finder menubar.

Select Computer, then Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences

Open "Audio" folder.

Right click these two files and select "Move to Trash".

com.apple.audio.DevicesSettings.plist

com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist

Close the window. Restart the computer.

"

I really really hope someone can help me to solve this problems.

Many thanks!

you first have to search and delete these files:

  • /Library/Preferences/com.apple.soundpref.plist
  • ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.soundpref.plist
  • /Library/Preferences/Audio/com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist
  • /Library/Preferences/Audio/com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist

and then:

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
  3. Turn on the computer.
  4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
  5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
  6. Release the keys.

Caveat Emptor!

To anyone thinking about testing out derolli's suggestion, as I mentioned in a previous comment, resetting the PRAM completely wiped my mid-2013 MacBook Air.

I'm a long time power mac user.

This stuff is not new to me.

Clearly, there are issues going on with Mavericks.

To prove my point: now... the "no audio" problem is intermittent. Sometimes there's no audio after sleep... sometimes the audio just picks right back up where it left off.

All I'm saying is that you can't expect Mavericks to behave consistently and I would definitely recommend using Time Machine. It's the only thing that saved my ... well ... you know 🙂.

Good Luck.

Also having the same issue on a brand new (late 2013) MacBook Pro 13" retina with 10.9. No sound sometimes after waking up. Very annoying and only a restart fixes it. I see lines like this in the console, but not sure if this is related

I've found that the audio is ok with the headphones plugged in but is 'greyed out' when removed. I've tried all the trouble-shooting steps in this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5478554?answerId=23514960022#23514960022 but had no luck.

One thing i'v noticed is that the Sound defaults to the Optical digital-out port as opposed to the speakers in System Preferences: Sound.

For me, restarting doesn't even work to reset the sound :-(
