Mail rules in OS Mavericks 10.9 don't apply to Sent Messages

Maybe its time to dump Mail.app?! Apple is missing the mark in a number of areas for Enterprise users IMHO.

I've been looking at the current mail options out there and from what I saw, they fall short as well. Outlook is absolutely not an option until they go 64-bit and their "Smart Folders" are actually smart.

The closest thing I can find that comes close for me is Thunderbird but it causes more issues than it solves due to its access of the Calendar folder via IMAP in Exchange. I tried it the other day and it did something to change calendar entries that resulted in invitees to my meetings having to re-accept/deny the event going back several months.

I think what amazes me is both Apple and Microsoft are again in the same boat, developing bloat-ware that has more bells and whistles than meeting the need.

Maybe Apple should consider an Enterprise version of OS X?! = OS X/E thats tuned specifically for Enterprise users. I'd even be willing to pay for the OS if it was more robust and addressed the need.

The problems have existed since Mavericks and no joy on fixes since. Genius Bar guy denies it's a problem. He disagrees the clicking on name and email pops up without name is a problem and says well, just type a few letters in the address bar and Apple puts in the rest. Yeah, five clicks is better than one. Anyway, no fix, no use, and just a hassle. Reverting to 10.8 is dangerous and time consuming even if done right the first time.

Steve is gone, OSX fails to put user first, new Apple Xmas ad is phony and cheating, and emphasis is all on IOS and ITunes which is confusing and complicated but profitable. ICloud is a disaster for many reasons.

The bloom is off the rose and I've been with Apple since 1979 with Apple II and now have nine active devices for three people.

I am in your exact boat Jim, specifically the product failing for Enterprise users. Thunderbird is downloaded and ready to go, however, it does introduce new problems and I've got to hold off until after the holidays (at least). When I leave Apple Mail I am not looking back or ever coming back. This is worse than bloat-ware. It is misguided and untested user interface design that is costing my business REAL dollars, not to mention time and frustration. Apple has successfully broken its mail application, for reasons unknown. The only thing I can think of is hubris.

If using iCloud and signed in with the same Apple ID, I do know that even in ML, users can 'see' all their own Rules in the list at once, even from different Macs. They are just 'unchecked'. I guess this is a feature to 'share/have' all your rules in one list for all your Mail clients. Please note that none of the Mail clieants' rule will show in the iCloud's rule.

I'm at the stage where I'm considering rolling back to Mountain Lion. I wish I could roll back to Snow Leopard which frankly is their most efficient version of OS X ever but it won't run on my MacBook Air 2012 (or so I've been told)

If anyone else is considering rolling back, here are a few things to consider.

• WeirdKid Software makes a product called "Emailchemy" that can backup and archive all mail to various messaging formats such as standard MBOX, EML, even Entourage format. I plan to use this to archive all mail to standard MBOX format then import it back to Mail when I get it running again.
• All Numbers, Pages and Keynote documents that were converted after upgrading (another huge waste) will get exported to iWork '09 versions and I'll have to live with the sunk costs.
• All main apps, Contacts, Calendar, Safari, etc. will be individually archived then imported later.
• All documents will need to be archived to an external drive - not rely on TimeMachine due to the differences in OS ver.

There are a few things to consider when making these changes beyond the above but is user specific.

WARNING: If you are unsure about doing this, DON'T! If you know your way around OS X, you probably already have a process for rolling back.

Bottom line, Mavericks appears to me to be like Lion was, an interim step to something else much more stable. If not, I guess I'll be on Mountain Lion for a very long time.

That is a big step! I cringe thinking about it. I'm looking at Postbox right now. Jeesh -- at least the Rules (filters) are functional. Thank you for also mentioning Numbers and Pages. An incredible waste. I've been wondering what to do with these now dysfunctional applications. I've gone back DREAD to MS products.

Surprisingly I just spent the 45 minutes on the phone with Apple Support in a deep discussion regarding the probems with Mail rules. I originally went to Apple support via the Apple site and engaged in chat. After describing the issue to chat support rep I was asked for a phone number and I was then called by a support tech. To be honest I think something may be done at this point since I voiced my frustrations and also gave them the URL to is discussion. Fingers crossed!

Well, I have voiced my frustrations in the MAIL FEEDBACK and REPORT OSX BUG departments too, but if it gets fixed, I'll happily give you the credit.

Just on the offchance, I created a NEW rule that says

If ToOrFrom contains "XXX@"

Move message to mailbox "Eraseme"

Play sound "Sosumi"

Run Applescript "Speak Name of Sender".

This is the same as the old rules which worked before, but now fail under 10.9.

Alas, no change. Applying the rule to a message in INBOX, results in NO move, and NO script, but it DOES play the sound.

For what its worth, Mail.app has stopped working all together. I have mail in my inbox on the Exchange and iCloud servers that not only isn't showing up in Mail but has ceased to synchronize all together.

Guess its time to move off Mail much sooner than expected

Same problem in 10.9.1 for me. Mail will be moved to another mailbox ONLY from the inbox, automatically or manually, but NOT moved from any other mailbox. I reported this to Apple... [sigh]

All my rules worked just fine under Mountain Lion. New rules and old rules exhibit the same behavior.

For now I will rely on the great MailRecent plugin to move sent messages to my most commonly used mailboxes.

Well, mystery. Since Mavericks no joy with Mail and interaction with Contacts as described by all of us.

But....yesterday for ten minutes I could click on name in Address Panel and up would pop an email with that contact in the 'To" address field! I loved it. Like the old days. I checked many addresses and they all worked. Then the ability disappeared and I can not get it back. Tried everything.

After the Mail update it did not fix anything for me, until the mystery fix..and now back to not working.

IMac, two screens, 10.9.1 Mail no plug ins. Safari, Contacts.

Rule to move old SENT folder content to the Trash is still not working after the 10.9.1 update. This is via the "Apply Rules" menu item from the Messages menu.

It appears Smart Groups aren't working for me either ( also see TidBits post )

Same here - rules not working. Feedback sent to Apple.

Still having issues with my Mail rules in Mavericks. Unable to 'Mark as Read' or Flag based on rules that had worked perfectly in previous versions. Although I am not debilitated by this, it sure is telling about the attention to detail Apple is clearly lacking.

Would encourage you to file Feedback with Apple. If Apple receives enough feedback, they might work on it.
