File Sharing broken after Upgrade to 10.9

I think there are multiple problems cropping up and confusing us. For a while I was totally unable to find my Macbook Pro from my MacMini. Reading that the SMB might work, I clicked that as well as AFB, and was able to see the Macbook -- but some passwords didn't work. In disgust, I rebooted both machines AND the WiFi router. Unclicking the SMB boxes now allows passwords to work. I suspect the rebooting helped because both the Mini and the WiFi had been running for weeks without a reboot, and something had gotten a little bit off.

So far, my recommendation is to unclick SMB so login through user ID will work. You may also need to reboot the router and/or the mac to clean out the cruft.

Just use your shortname to login if SMB sharing is also activated.

The two forms of my name on the two machines are in the formats John Doe and johndoe. I could not log into SMB using either one. It would not recognize the password and the entry box jiggled on screen. So that didn't work for me.

maybe your opendirectory is broken? Can you add new users to opendirectory?

I had been at this problem between three mac pros. Finally found a little dumb solution. I hope it works for you guys.

Go to system preferences/ Network

And add a location. Doesn't matter what you call it. Just move it from automatic to a a custom location.

After that all sharing worked.

At the top of this screen the pull down menu that says automatic. Right there add a location. hit the +. Do this with all of the computers you are unable to gain access from and this should solve it. (maybe)

Having the same problem here.

Had no issues with my 07 iMac. Just migrated to the brand new Retina unit, and can't log into things anymore.
