Ok now we are getting in the weeds and confusing the OP by not answering his question correctly. If you looked it up on Mactracker, then it clearly states that the maximum OS is 10.6.8.
@kappy - you listed the requirement and then contradicted it. Lion requires a Core 2 Duo and the MBP 1,1 has a Core Duo. These are different processors even though they have similar names.
To clarify to the OP (@anthonycar9) - the January 2006 MBP is a core duo - NOT A CORE 2 DUO - which is needed to run Lion. You will only be able to run Snow Leopard on this machine - up to 10.6.8 which you have now.
No. The latest OS X version that model can run is Lion 10.7.5. You will need more RAM if it does not have 2 GBs already installed.
Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax. It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
Lion System Requirements
1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
or Xeon processor
2. 2GB of memory
3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
4. 7GB of available space
5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
nope 😉
OS X Mavericks supports the following Macs:
I agree! I added that clarification because you indicated it would run Lion which is not supported on that hardware by Apple! I'm glad we are on the same page.
Not any that do not have a dual-core CPU. Specs below for whomever wants them.

According to Mactracker the MBP 1,1 came with a core duo processor, so it should be able to run Lion as long as it has 2 GBs of installed RAM. But it can't run Mountain Lion or Mavericks.
The January 2006 Macbook Pro will run Snow Leopard max! It has an Intel Core Duo and 10.6.8 is as high as it will go (supported that is).
(supported that is).
Best to avoid the topic. We cannot discuss such things, so mods will simply remove such posts. Just a friendly note.
Lion is still supported on certain 2006 MBPs, but Mountain Lion is not supported on any of them.
True, but NOT on the January 2006 Macbook Pro which the OP specifically asked about.
