Desktop icons don't 'land' where dropped.

In Mavericks my dekstop icons never seem to 'land' where I drop them after dragging.

Before when you drag and drop a file it landed at the closest spot in the grid from where you 'dropped' it. Now they just drop at random.

If I let one go at the top right corner, it might end up one grid point over, it might end up on the bottom of the screen in the middle, or right in the middle, there is no telling where they end up, ofter they end up underneith open windows, so I have to close down stuff to find them again.

Is this a know issue (if so, is there a solution) or am I completely alone and on my own?

Thanks for the suggestion,

It did alter the behaviour, the icons seem te be landing closer now, but not quite right. At this point they seem to be landing on the horizontal row wher I drop it, or the one above or below, and anywhere from most left to most right.

The don't end up lower or higher than these three lines, but the actual location wher they end up is still unpredictable.

A new relevant observation.

The problem only occurs when draging icons/files from a finder window to the desktop.

Dragging files around with both starting point and end point on the desktop land right where they are supposed to.

Files dragged from a Safari or Mail window ALSO land where there are supposed to! No problems there.

Just Finder to Desktop.

I have the same problem: dragging a file from a folder onto the desktop, the file often does not land where I released the mouse button but at random location - sometimes in the middle of the screen, sometimes in the top right corner, etc.

Dragging a file already on the desktop works correctly - it lands where I released the mouse button.

My machine is a early 2013 iMac. OS is 10.9.1

OK I think I understand better what is happening and have a solution:

Behaviour seems to be dependent on what View is used in the folder from which the file is being dragged from. If the files in the folder are displayed as icons, dragging them onto the desktop, they land at the mouse release position. If on the other hand the files in the folder are displayed in list view, then dragging results in the random placement behavior. In this second scenario, to get the file to land at the desired position, wait a second or two at the desired placement position before releasing the mouse button. The file object you are dragging should transform into an icon. Once this occurs the mouse button can be released and the file will be placed at the desired position.
