Problems with M-Audio Keystation 49e midi keyboard after 10.4.7 upgrade

I've noticed a problem with my midi keyboard and GB3 after this most recent OS upgrade. You start playing the keyboard using some instrument such as Grand Piano. After a while there is no sound coming out. You must turn off/on the keyboard, then it starts working again. Sometimes its not as easy, and it requires shutting down GB and restarting. This morning I had to actually reboot the machine before I could get any sound.

This is really a pain in the neck. My son is trying to practice his piano and keeps having to power cycle the keyboard every 5 minutes.

Any suggestions? This has happened before the OS upgrade, but it just seems to be happening more in the past few days.

Thanks,
Alfredo

In my opinion it doesn't sound like a software issue, I suggest taking the keyboard to another computer for testing if possible.
also you can try testing with the audio midi setup utility, open /applications/utilities/audio midi setup utility and use the test feature there: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301000
I think that if it works there without needing to be power cycled, the issue may be GarageBand.

In this case, I'm connecting it to the back of my iMac G4 FP, not the keyboard. I can try it on my G5 and see if I can reproduce the problem. I will also try the midi test utility, which I never knew about. I may also try the 'ol repair permissions, verify disk. I just did that on my G5 and it fixed some lockup problems in general.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I have had my keyboard USB ports shut down my
Keystation 49e everytime during start-up after 2
different updates. 10.4.7 included. In both cases,
though, it just eventually stopped shutting off the
ports.

xs4is,

Do you keep your keyboard plugged constantly into your mac? I always unplug mine when I'm done. I don't think I have ever had a USB port shut down. Just wondering if the unplugging takes care of that.

Mine's plugged into the keyboard and on all the time (bus powered). And my issue definitely coincided with OS updates. The weird part is when the issue just went away both times.

I would turn my keyboard off, but I am the type of guy to forget that I did then freak out for half an hour trying to figure out what is wrong with my system...then realizing that I'm a dumb@ss.

To clarify my early post, I don't care for the feel of the controller, I own one as a back up, it sits around and always works perfect (plus it takes no drivers!) every time I plug it in. My friend has had one for a couple years as his main controller and recently it has started to give some ghost midi signals while recording (unintentional pitch and mod animations while recording) I was at another place recently where we had one that would not respond at all, 1 mac desktop, 1 powerbook and 1 dell laptop. All around I see this keyboard everywhere and it works fine for almost everyone on every computer, plus the one I own is perfect. But I have had some mixed results in my personal experiences with the device. I would be surprised if this device has developed an issue because of the mac os update, that sounds like a coincidence in my opinion because the device is "class compliant" and does not require drivers; but that is my opinion and a SWAG (the term SWAG is property of hangtime and borrowed, I hope HT takes no offense)

When testing this issue it is best to have the keystation plugged directly into the computer. In response to the question earlier by Alfredo Jahn regarding the audio midi setup utility: I am not sure what the traingle indicates in your case (i think you can click that triangle even if the device is unplugged) exactly, here is what I do to test:
1) open the audio midi setup utility and click MIDI Devices at the top. You should see the automatically assigned or driver created profile for the Keystation there, if it is ghosted then it does not see the device currently.
2) unplug the device with the audio midi setup utility open, it should become ghosted when you unplug it, and turn bright again when it is plugged in
3) press the "Test Setup" button, press keys on the keyboard, does it beep?

Maybe try this with another user account. Make another user account and try the keystation in GarageBand in another user account. It is worth a shot, hope something here helps.

Hey Larry,

Thanks for your interest in my issue, but you are misunderstanding...

When the computer is starting up, it goes through and checks all the devices before you even get to log in. During the checking phase, the computer says something along the lines of "USB device drawing to much power. Shutting off that USB port." I then unplug then plug in the keyboard's USB cable and everything is hunky-dory. Then I sign in. Other than that, the keyboard is great.

And it definitely is OS related because during the immediate restart after 2 separate updates (10.4.7, and I think 10.4.3) this issue happened, then after a week or so it stopped.
